Windows 7: 'Startup Repair' on Win7 - how long does it take?

I rebooted, holding down F8. Then I chose booting from the hard disk. after that Checkdisk in DOS started up automatically.
I'm letting it run. It's been chugging away all night, but at least I can see what's going on. It'll probably take the weekend to complete at the rate its going now but I'll be patient and leave it alone. So far, there have been a lot of unreadable file record segments, which seems to be the reason for the slow progress.

If CHKDSK goes into limbo, then I'll do a disk format on Monday and hope the system image backup I've got works.

Your HD might be failing.

Even if the Disk Check fails I would test it using HD maker's full diag/repair CD scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp..

Sometimes the HD repair scan will fix HD enough that Disk Check can complete, returning the HD to service.

Before testing HD I'd copy my files out if you can't afford to lose them using one of the methods I posted earlier to retrieve files from unbootable OS.

It looks like something is stopping the CHKDSK from completing. I've been taking notes of the record segment numbers and it looks like the checker has gone so far, then returned to the beginning again.

I'm really hoping the system image is OK; but it looks like the HD may well be f*****d. I can return the base unit under warranty - would the system image restore onto a fresh HD?

Win7 Backup Imaging is reportedly not as dependable as others in reimaging to another HD, however it has worked for me each time I need that done. New HD needs to be the same size or larger.

If the DVD Repair console or Repair CD will find an installation to repair, then it should be reparable or at least you should be able to copy your files out using one of the methods I posted.

Hi Greg,
I spent yesterday trying to get things going again; I tried booting up and skipping past chkdsk. This almost worked, with Windows loading but freezing as soon as it got to loading the desktop.
I am going to contact warranty support and get them to send a replacement HDD. I'll then load this in, put the damaged disk in the spare bay and try to migrate the data across. If that fails, I'll try the system image.

I tried to get the Paragon Rescue kit to work for me, but it wouldn't load. I've tried to download Paragon's Recovery Suite 10, but the download link is offline. If this comes back on before Monday, I might give that a try first.

I have just interrupted a Win 7 startup repair. It had been working non-stop for 9 and 1/2 days (228 hrs) with no sign of finishing and I finally hit the reset button. The good news is that after this, windows started completely normally. I have yet to find out if the machine is going to behave from now on in the short term.

Before I ran startup repair the machine froze during startup in safe mode.
