I have to disagree about running msconfig. I would uncheck everything except for your anti-virus software, spyware remover and personal firewall if you have one.

Could you provide a screenshot of Disk Management?

Go to Start > Run, and type diskmgmt.msc and expand the Window so we can see everything.
    Here you go

Hmm, I just booted it up, and it hung on the Starting Window screen for three minutes.. it's now really slow, I rebooted and had the same thing happen.

RAM and hard drive are OK

Hmm, ok at near idle, 39% memory is used and core 4 is averaging over 70% :S

I have an i5, which is a four core processor

On idle, in task manager Core 4 is always at 70%+ usage, this may be causing my system to hang?

    But not sure why

This is almost certainly a hardware issue. Just to make sure, can you try running a Live CD of Ubuntu, and see how it performs?

    Download | Ubuntu

Note that it's going to be slower anyway, as it is not a fully installed OS.

Test your system temps with Speedfan: SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

Also, go into msconfig, and in the Boot tab, select Advanced Options. Make sure the "Number of processors" box is UNchecked.

I have a temperature metre on the case and it shows the PC to be 32 degrees, which is fine I'm pretty sure

    The box was unchecked,

Before I install anything else, do you know of a way to check computer resources? There must be a reason why core 4 has such a high usage

Still run Speedfan; it's good to get a second opinion.

Not sure of a way to check individual cores, but you can check in Task Manager>Performance, and sort the list by CPU.

Alternatively, you can run perfmon /res from the start menu, and check out the CPU tab.

Hmm, a friend is going to let me borrow his Windows Disk tomorrow, just in case mine is bust.. that should determine whether it's my windows installation or not

I installed speedfan, and it was around 30-35, but the same as the case really.. so the temperatures seem fine :)

To tell if the Windows installation is the fault, run the SFC command: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Won't hurt to reinstall, but you may be able to save yourself some time.

Has your problem resolved? I have the same problem on a new Dell laptop with Win7 32bit platform.

It took more than 30 minutes to start an application under Win7 32bit platform. Set compatibility to Winxp SP3 didn't help. After starting up, each click will take ages to get response. Other applications run OK on this computer. And this application runs ok on other Win7 32bit platform.

    Thanks for any advice.

    Regards,

    Ke
