The best guide I know is Black Viper: Black Viper's Web Site

Edited to add: Orlando is OK for a big metro area. I grew up in the country on the outskirts of Orlando. I liked it then. I moved away in 1964 and returned 2.5 years ago. I do not like urban/suburban life. :) Fortunately I can escape to the country in about an hour.
blackviper is something i have run across before... its huge! alot of information there

i just moved downtown in orlando, im a tad younger than you tho i love it here

Orlando is great for a large metro area, much nicer than most. And for a younger person, there is plenty to do. I am basically a country boy at heart. Welcome to Central Florida! I'm glad you like it. There certainly are worse places to be.

Yes the Black Viper Web Site is the definitive source of information on Windows 7 services. It took me 3 straight hours of study to familiarize myself with all of the interdependencies of the various services the first time I visited the site. Many people claim their is no use in disabling unneeded services in Win 7, but I caught at least a dozen of those system resource sucking Services which I have absolutely no need for running and I just can't understand how that can not be considered an improvement.

The answer to that is because Win 7 manages memory and resources differently and much more efficiently than did its predecessors. Unless something is wrong, Win 7 is not going to bog down. Removing a handful of services will not make any difference in speed or efficiency. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. Win 7 is not going fill up RAM and bog down unless something is not working properly. Stopping some services may speed up boot time a little; but it does not change the operating speed. If Windows does not need a service, it will stop the service.

There is small Tool that can help you Tweak the startup created out of Vipers guide which Carl posted Tweak Windows Services with SMART Utility : HomePage | The Windows Club

In short be careful when you play with it. Create a Restore point.

    Hope this helps,
    Captain
From the Windows Club Website about the SMART (Service Management And RealEasy Tweaking) Utility

"You can always tweak your services manually individually, but what this utility does is automate the entire process to give you the desired settings. Based on the recommendations of the BlackVipers Service Configuration Guide, the utility offers 3 sets of pre- configured tweaks :

    1. Safe
    2. Tweaked
    3. Advanced or BareBones

The utility has set the Presets to check for Service before applying Tweak. There is also a button to re-set services to Windows Default Settings."

Thanks for the link Carl and excellent advice indeed Captain.
