    Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't 7 properly align itself if you do a clean install onto a secure erased SSD?

    Always has for me. Only time this wasn't true was after restoring an image from 1 drive to another physical drive.

    Thanks, really good read. Still a tad lost though - does anyone know of any software that can tell if your HDD(s) is aligned correctly?

    Faster than this ....my laptop will get very very very...HOT ...
    I had a hot HP laptop. Replaced the HDD with an 80GB Intel SSD. No more heat now.

    Can someone please explain what "aligning partitions" is all about?

    I've never heard of doing this. How do you do this before installing your OS etc? Can you do it to primary disks that already have an OS installed?
