Windows 7: Windows Explorer takes forever on startup

There is no real way to be sure other than by seeing if uninstalling your AV makes a difference. If it doesn't, you can feel free to reinstall almost immediately after confirming that it is not related to the problem.

If you want to wait on doing that, the next think to do is try a clean boot. This will tell us if a program that runs at startup is the cause. Open the start menu and type msconfig, then press enter. In the Windows that opens select Selective startup, then uncheck "Load startup items". Then go to the services tab. First check the box that says Hide Microsoft services, and then select Disable All. Click Apply, then OK. A dialog box will appear asking if you want to restart. Select Restart. Let us know if this solves your problem. If so, we will have to test to see which item(s) is the main cause.

Hi! So I just tried that but it didn't work, same thing happened. :(

Do you think it could be a hardware issue? Because originally this laptop came with Vista as OS and I already had the problem then. I even had a different antivirus software back then. At least now with Windows 7 and NOD 32 it's not as bad as it used to be. With Vista windows explorer was really unstable, it would often crash or freeze even when it had been running for a while.

Did you do a clean install or upgrade install of 7? If you did a upgrade install, then the next thing to try is a clean install. If you do a clean install, go to your computer's manufacturers website and download the relavent drivers for your computer and put them on an external HDD, flash drive, or a CD. Then refer to the following tutorials:

SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation (just do step one)
Clean Install Windows 7
Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version (use if you have an upgrade version)

If you have already done a clean install, we can look at hardware next.

Hi!
Sorry this took so long but I sent my laptop in to have it looked at and apparently there was something wrong and they replaced the OS. I hope that fixed it, we'll see
