Yeah, the shell:sendto works of course. But for the for the %xxx% you need the Run box - at least on my system.

If that option is missing in your user profile..here's how you can restore it:

Send To Context Menu - Remove or Restore Default Items

Click start, paste the following and press ENTER

%systemdrive%\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo

right click the Compressed (zipped) folder and click COPY

now change the URL of that window to shell:sendto press enter
right click into that window and click PASTE to restore the Compressed zipped) folder

I did this. There was already a file of that name in the shell:sendto folder with same size and date as the one I copied. But I pasted and chose replace when asked. No change to send to options.

I tried both copy from app data and download from the link. copy pasted ok but neither restored the sendto option. And there was here was already a file of that name in the shell:sendto folder, but for some reason it does not display. I paste / replaced it. I also tried deleting it first then pasting in new. nope.

@gregglee so you'r problem is not that the shortcut disappeared but that the option for the internal zip was switched off somewhere.
Did you by any chance install /uninstall another packer program that might have taken over the ZIP function ?
If so, you could try the attached reg file to restore the original settings under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.zip
just merge it with your registry

@whs: That's odd those are regular windows-internal placeholders/System variables
like %temp% which brings you to the tempdir of the actual logged in account.
or %windir% that brings you to the installation folder of your windows.
You see me baffled since they worked with every windows I came across so far since W95.

I hear what you say. Maybe it is only my system. I will try it on the wife's lappy and see. Thanks.

Right-click file/Send to desktop option gone
Maybe I'm getting too old to learn new tricks. (I liked Win XP.) Anyway.... Say I create a file and then I want to send a shortcut of that file to the desktop. Up until about a month ago the 'send shortcut to desktop' option was there when I right-clicked the file. Now it's gone. (I can and...
