I purchased an Acer Aspire 5742 laptop and a problem caused it to hang up just a flashing cursor and no keys worked, the only way I was able to turn it off was unplugging the battery.
That problem has been resolved but I would like to know if there is any way to turn it off without doing that.
I cannot see any mention in the on-line user guide.

I know that you said that no keys worked, but perhaps the WIN key might: When the system freezes and you cannot move the cursor, you can press the WIN key on the keyboard and navigate with the right-arrow Ø key – then scroll up or down to Restart or Shut Down. There is always one letter underlined for the various actions in the pop-up window - e.g. "R" for Restart or "U" for Shut Down. Just hit that letter and the action will be performed.
This happened when I had a Macrium Restore CD inserted and had booted from that CD which must of been corrupt because it just hung.
So I was not going into the Windows operating system.
I do that think the Windows key would work in those circumstances, or would it?

There are certain keyboard keys that are set to work in instances when most others will not (e.g. the Esc key, or the Control-Alt-Delete combination, etc.) We'll never know if the WIN key would've worked in your situation, but if something similar happens in the future, you'll have at least this one additional option to try. By the way, rather than unplugging your battery, didn't your on/off switch work to turn your computer off?
Every time I pressed the Power button or any other button it just beeped, never done anything.

Normally you should be able to turn off power by just pressing the power button while still in boot mode, as is the case with a flashing cursor. That power button only beeped is unusual.
Macrium's boot CD may have a power key lockout so reimaging jobs can't be interrupted except for power failure.
Are you having any other performance issues while in boot mode or Win7? Monitor for awhile to see.
By the way Jack, just in case you didn't know this, and in case this situation ever happens again (which I sure hope it doesn't), if you decide to try to turn off your power via the power button, you may have to hold the power button down for 5 - 10 seconds or so before it actually shuts down the computer.
