This has dragged on quite awhile. If I was you I would run the Boot trace, PM it's expert Cluberti and ask him to interpret it. He may nail what's hanging your boot.

If not, I would insist that HP replace the machine while it's still under warranty and you have enough time to shake out the replacement before warranty expires.
If this is not possible for some reason, I would find a clean-copy Win7 DVD, slipstream SP1 into it and run a Repair Install
Slipstream Windows 7 SP1 into a Installation DVD or ISO File
If that doesn't help then I would wipe the HD and re-install windows 7
So it was functioning fine all week going to sleep nightly and upon waking it from sleep mode every morning, except this morning - no updates, nothing changed - I forced shutdown and upon restart, it started an automatic check disk. I was able to see something about recovering Event... from 2094 into 1055 - sorry, it went so fast (is there a way to pause the results before automatic restart?) Then it stated something about "journal" and rebooted, and it was fine.
HP want me to ship the PC in for repair, but that means I have to find another PC to work on in the meantime, since it could take 2 weeks to come back.
Unfortunately, you have to manually run this every time. However, it might be worth trying a few times until it happens.
It only happens after you've been asleep for more than a day or 2 specifically? I want to be certain you won't see it if you sleep for, say, 30 - 60 minutes. Correct?
correct, sleeping for or shutting down for a few hours, it awakes fine - even for a day or so, it is sometimes fine, but it can be 12 hours or 36 hours when it will act up, very sporadic, but never consistently within a few hours - it is always fine
Also, if I force a hard shut down via the power button, it starts fine
