Startup repair cycle.

Cant get into the stats atm.

Win 7 RC has been running really well. Lately startup repair (twice) is being engaged at boot. The first time it happened the desktop was restored to an earlier time and I thought the problem was fixed. Last night when I shut the system down it took a long time. This morning it is repairing, going through the third reboot now and each time it repairs it takes an hour. Ah it just started repairing again. The HD is only a month old.

I read about starting from the install dvd but my cmos bios wont allow me to enable that function. I read you can start the instalation and then hit the repair option. I am unable to do this.

Any advice appreciated.

Ok finally I got the desktop to boot from the dvd via the f11 key.

After selecting repair from the install options and then restore computer to an earlier time I am getting that startup repair again! My system was restored to an earlier time,... earlier! Here we go again with that 1 hour repair cycle, auto reboot and again and again!

This also happened with repeatedly pressing the f8 key and trying to restore to an earlier time from that menu.

Ye gads, looks like a reinstall,.... rats.

I was disparing the fact that windows wouldn't start normally as the workstation was stuck on a chk disk, windows startup graphic cycle after the restore. This made me think my new HD might be corrupt.

Anyhow I forced a shut down, booted from the disk and selected install now. Choosing the upgrade option and then canceling the install after removing the dvd started up my machine normally!

Now windows is performing the upgrade (with online connection) which it says may take several hours, which I don't mind at all. I have the feeling we are getting somewhere for the first time today which is a big relief.

Mr Grim is of course correct. I just wanted to sound a minor note of caution. forcing a chkdsk to quit can cause data corruption so do it with care. Hope everything is on track

Sure no one wants to stop a check disk process. After it has run about 3 or 4 times in a cycle you get suspicious.

Update on the upgrade. It stopped halfway and said I needed to restart because resources were not accessible. Did that and now we are back to the startup repair merry go round.

Hmm no matter what I do the startup repair seems to default on boot. This means windows will not start normally even when instructed to do so. I think a fresh install is unavoidable. Then it is hang on and hope the HD is still ok. Thanks for your help so far.

So we know a little more. Just got back from the shop that built the machine. After only 1 month of use the HD was snafooed. Computerland put a new HD in on the spot after running a diagnostic.

It can happen.

Next time try Spinrite. That is, if you needed to save some important data and can afford the 89 bucks. (If it doesn't work he will refund your money).

Thanks, that's the reason I don't keep any work files on my comp :) If a drive goes down its not that bad.

@Mr GRiM, yes on my web explorations I have found others in the same boat. Not too many but some.
