Windows 7: Hard Drive Overtaxed

Hard Drive Overtaxed

Everytime I start my computer, it takes, sometimes up to an hour before the Hard Drive stops grinding and clicking, and the computer is actually "available".

I went to resource monitor and check to see what was sucking it dry, and it is often someone of my pictures, or videos from Documents. I'm not saying that those are the only things sapping it, but they are easily recognizable. I started thinking that maybe it was indexing my hard drive for spotlight search? Is that close?

If so, I would rather disable spotlight searching and have my computer back.

What can I try to get to the bottom of this?

Thanks guys!

You could have a lot of programs set to autostart at boot- click on Start orb, type msconfig, click Startup tab, then examine the entries there. Different people prefer different things but E.g. mine is only checked for the AV, the touchpad driver and the password manager. Uncheck anything that you dont need to autostart, if you cant figure out post a screenshot here.

Check the AV settings and disable startup scans, if enabled. If you're not comfortable you can go back to them, this is only for test purposes. Also check the preferences/settings of your apps and disable any unnecessary startups.

Go through this, we can take it further from there.

This is my startup menu. I don't see anything useless checked.

Well you are the best judge for that but you havent followed through the rest of my earlier post. Here are some more things you can do to test:

1) Disable the indexing service. Click on start orb, type services.msc, locate "windows search", then stop the service and set startup type to disabled. Also, locate services that are set for automatic (delayed) start.

2) Disconnect any devices such as usb devices that are not necessary for boot.

3) Update drivers esp. chipset drivers.

4) Run a malware scan with free malwarebytes.

5) Try an app called Soluto, it'll tell you what programs consume max boot time.
