    Windows 7 PC lagging

I've searched and searched but could not find the answer so that is why I am posting this. If it has been answered before, please just let me know so I can close this thread.

I built my own PC and have been using it perfectly for a year now. Suddenly, I turn it on one day and it begins to lag and freeze. Cursor skips around the screen and especially when watching any video (small or large), the PC heavily hesitates and is very choppy.

    PC Configuration:
    Asus P5K Mobo + E5500 Pentium Dual Core Processor + 4 Gigs Corsair DDR2 RAM + ASUS CD/DVD/DVD-R + MSI N94GT-MD512 GeForce 9400 GT Graphic Card + 1TB Seagate HDD + Windows 7 x86 Professional Edition.

I've done my research and I am up to this point:

Did "msconfig" and turned off pretty much all software running in the background.
I've defragged and checked for errors on the HDD's; Windows 7 it showed no problems.
Deleted cache and cookies from internet.
Did memory test using MemTest86; no memory problems.
Did CCleaner, cleaned registry, folders, etc.; no problems.
Re-downloaded drivers for graphic card, no problems.
Re-downloaded drivers for mouse and keyboard (both Logitech)
Swapped the mouse's wireless receivers into different USB slots.
Up to this point, no conflicts are shown in "My Device"
I even re-installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 back into the PC.

After all of this, the PC still lagging and twitching. I figured (accepted) that it may be a hardware issue, but where do I start? Any suggestions if it could be Graphics Card, HDD, Motherboard or even processor? Could it be a simple cable?

Please, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks for responding but...

    Thanks faizanshakyboy for responding.

I did that already as well using Norton.

The funny thing is that yesterday when I went home from work, I played a movie and it was flawless, no skipping or problems. After turning it off for about 2 hours, I returned to surf the net and the skipping and lagging continued...WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME?

I guess it's inevitable and I'll have to do what I dread doing the most; taking the PC apart to see what the problem is. The next step is to start taking out hardware one by one. First would be the graphics card then switch HDD.

Anyone else have other suggestions before I start ripping my PC's innards?

    Hi vm2005,

Norton is the worst AV software known to man. Try Malwarebytes (the free version should work) and ClamWin (also free). If those don't work, then I would try a SFC scan. Start>CMD>Run as Administrator> SFC/Scannow

Wait until it finishes, and restart the computer. If that doesn't work, then perform a Repair Install.

    Let us know what happens,

If you have windows defender turned on, it will automaticly scan your hard drive on schedule. You can safely turn it off if you have another antivirus software.

Study the Event Viewer>Custom>Admin view for repeat errors to google text and ID# for resolution. Check also the Performance log on Advanced Tools page accessed by clicking your WEI score link at Computer>Properties. Check for cued issues at top of Tools page, Generate A System Health Report.

Look for issues cued in Action Center in System Tray. Type "Solutions" in Start Search box to see if any have been sent for Problems reported or not. Always report problems when asked as Windows 7 is interactive this way.

Check for infection by installing Malwarebytes, update, run a Full Scan. Many issues can be solved by running a free lightweight AV like MS Security Essentials or Avast 5 with the Windows 7 Firewall for best performance. 32 bit Avast 5 will give you a deep boot scan.

Test your hardware by running memtest86 CD for 5-6 passes or overnight: RAM - Test with Memtest86+, then test the HD using maker's diag/repair full CD scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp..

Check temps for overheating by installing SpeedFan, blow dust out of the case using canned air, check all connections carefully avoiding static discharge to components by touching case first, reseat RAM.

Try a Clean Boot Procedure to learn what programs are running unseen which can be causing problems. Turn off all Startup items except AV and gadgets: Startup Programs - Change

Some of these steps suggested for cleaning up a factory bloatware install might help.

Run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker to repair any damaged or corrupt OS files.

As a last resort before reinstall try a Repair Install which can fix most problems as it reinstalls the OS while keeping all programs, files and settings in place.

Tips for a clean reinstall, which is actually better than getting a new computer with today's bloated factory pre-installs.

Thanks, I'll do that this weekend

Thanks the unofficial, gregrocker and Lander0101 for your awesome responses.

I'm going to uninstall Norton and replace with Avast, as advised. Thanks the unofficial.

I'll also look into windows defender, something I did forget to do the first time. Thanks Lander0101.

gregrocker, I really appreciate the response ESPECIALLY the links on your response. I'll do everything that you've advised and post the results.

I have a busy weekend in front of me...

    Thanks everyone!

Hey everybody. I really appreciate all of your responses.

I found out that all of my hardware was working properly. I reinstalled a brand new Windows 7 and scanned it with a Avast virus scan. Everything came out clean and it's not stuttering this time!

I did everything the same, except I used Avast to scan for virus. I have to say that I like Avast more than Norton, especially because Avast doesn't take as much resources as Norton to run. Now I have more memory to do other things!

    Everything is well again!

I can't say thanks enough to everyone who responded. Your contribution and expertise is what I can see makes this forum an awesome forum! KEEP IT UP!

Good to know you resolved it. Most of the time it is some security component, and in your case it was norton :)
