    Sleep Trouble

Okay. Here's the deal. I've been through and can't find help for this specific issue. Until today my computer would go to sleep after 30 minutes and would require login on wake-up (which I need it to do). Yesterday, avast updated and I restarted my computer. At some point between then and now, the sleep function has ceased to work. The monitor will go dark but that's as far as it goes. If I use the sleep button in the start menu everything works fine, but I need it to work automatically. As far as I have found none of the previous settings (from when it worked) have changed. It is very important that my computer sleep on its own and require my password when it wakes. I get the feeling it's going to be something stupid but any help or advice would be highly appreciated.

Make sure Win7 and your monitor are set to sleep at Control Panel>Power Options. Click on the active plan's settings, then Advanced Power settings. Under sleep, set it to 30 minutes, then Hibernate after 45-60 minutes or more. Hibernate will save your work on desktop and shut down the computer, ideal if you decide not to come back.

If these are set correctly, then System Restore to when it slept correctly. Save a Win7 backup image so you can always reimage to a time when it sleeps. Sleep issues can be very thorny otherwise.

The troubleshooting process is to update your display driver, check Pwr Mgmt tabs on all devices in Manager to disable waking, check performance log for what is hanging it from sleeping: troubleshooting steps

The tool which the Pro's use to trace sleep issues is here: Trace Windows 7 boot-shutdown-hibernate-standby-resume issues - MSFN Forums
