Problem: Autocheck program not found - skipping autocheck"
About a month ago, I had a Windows 7 bootup problem, and a window popped up asking for my Windows 7 Pro OA product key, which I dutifully typed in from the bottom of my HP Pavillion DV6. It then booted up normally but has ever since during boot up caused a black screen with white lettering to appear that says "autocheck program not found - skipping autocheck", which it lists twice on two contiguous lines, BUT still proceeds to bootup normally after that. In addition, at shutdown, ever since it now always installs 2 Windows updates, no matter when or how often I shut it down during the day. My wife has a near identical machine and system, and she never gets the updates near as often, nor sees the autocheck message, so it must be related to the product key request incident.
These are nuisances and consume my time waiting longer for bootups and shutdowns.
Suggestions that I've read in this forum include:
1) using the Windows 7 dvd to boot from the dvd and perform startup repair at least three times in a row
2) using the bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment
3) clean up the registry - not sure how to do this from the thread I read.
Any other suggestions?????
Many thanks to all,
