Hi alan i also had this problem, and like you i was not content just to leave it has it was, i tried everything to get rid of the shield on my icons...then 1 day when i wasn't even looking for the solution it popped up right under my nose!
i was using a small program call Microangelo, its a program that lets you edit or make your own icons. after you install it, it puts an option in the right click menu called appearance so you right click any icon and then select appearance it brings up this box which is where it allows you to change the default icon.
in the corner there is a system tab, if you click on that there is a an option to remove the shield and shortcut overlays on your icons, the result is global not just for the icon that you clicked on.
i don't know if you ever managed to solve it yourself or if you still have the problem but if you cant find the program i can send it you!?
