    Noisy Fan

    alright so i cleaned out the dust from my computer and installed speedfan which froze my computer but i eventually got it working and it shows core 0 at around mid 50c with a flame symbol core 1 alternates between a check mark an arrow and a flame as does core 2 and 3 and te last three are at a low 50C. my computer is elevated and this started after i updated the Bus controller with slimdriver and my AMD graphics. i've updated teh BIOS done a clean boot and talked to the guys at dell support who said it was a software issue and got mad because i had updated 7 home premium with ultimate an said that that had messed up the command center which regulated the fans yet the computer ran fine with ultimate and i doubt that 7 ultimate was that different from home premium to make a programme ment to run on premium not work so i went to software support and claimed that nothing was wrong with the software so putting my trust with you guys since you haven't let me down so far any suggestions? oh i switched the cpu to passive instead of active. oh and in the BIOS under preformance there is an option to enable turbo mode yet despite trying both disabled and enabled does nothing the line above remains turbo enabled and the driver on the dell support for turbo can't install because it lacks the hardware so thats my story. :)

    Couple of suggestions that may (or may not) help. First, I think I'd invest in a laptop cooling pad to assist with ventilation. Then I'd check to see if you have any resource hogs that are set to start up immediately and contribute to higher temps. The only things I have set to start up immediately are my antivirus (Microsoft Security Essentials) and the synaptics touchpad.

    Have you had a chance to see what your core temps are now? Running your comp in a 40 degree room isn't realistic (IMHO) especially as summer approaches. The room will probably be closer to 75. If SpeedFan doesn't play nice you could try another freebie called Speccy. It's a system info tool and provides real time temps. It's made by Piriform - the same folks who make CCleaner, a junk file cleaner. CCleaner also has some other tools including a startup analyzer. You can disable programs to see how it affects temps and system funtionality. On my machine the only startup programs I have are my antivirus and touchpad. Everything else is disabled and only runs when I need it to.

    Speed fan is of little use in reducing noise on a machine that is running at high ambient temperatures, and where the chips are also running at high temperatures, because it merely runs the fans at full speed trying to get things cooled down.

    Your problem is general lack of cooling, not fan control. A cooling pad would doubtless help somewhat, but will also be far less efficacious at high ambient temperatures.

    Are you sure the heatsink is still attached to the CPU tightly?

    Speccy says 44-8C as for the heatsink i don't know exactly what you are refering to but i where the three intakes are at the back and bottom of the comuter there is a space where i can just fit my entire hand under. and the fans are still going at the same rate which is more than they were a month or so ago. back then you couldn't here the fan unless I was playing a game or some high process user, now when i start up my computer its quiet until the screen where you access the bios and then its loud from then on.

    The heatsink is what transfers the heat away from your CPU. If it is choked with dust it doesn't work very well, and running a laptop with a choked heatsink can kill it quickly. Also, the fan controls keep the fan(s) running at high speed trying to cool the heatsink, which they can not do properly if it is choked.

    This is for another machine, but should give you the idea;

    Extend your laptop's life! Clean the dust out of its heat sink.

    Get an accurate reading of your room temperature.

    You say it is in the 40s. That is VERY hot. Most rooms are in the low to mid 20s.

    If it is in the 40s, your temps are good not bad. CPU temps 10 to 15 degrees above room temp are good.
