Windows 7 has slowed to a crawl

I need some help.

All of a sudden my Windows 7 machine has turned into a Commodore 64 in speed.
Last night I attempted to back-up the machine to my WHS. The hard drive being backed up is a 120 GB system drive with 10 GB free. I started the back-up at 8 PM last night and this morning at 7 AM it was only 70% complete.
On 7/2 the system backed up in 7 minutes 29 sec.
on 7/4 it increased to 19 minutes and 57 sec.

I have ran CCCleaner, Avast, and spyware software. None of these have made a difference. I loaded WIN 7 Build 7100 on this system on the day it was released; up until yesterday everything ran fine.

Even though “RESTORE POINT” is set to ‘ON”; no restore points have been created.

I do have backups of the machine on my WHS going back to May 2009.

I need some suggestions.

I think everything is to cluttered since theres barely any space, just use a external hdd

I now have 93 GB used; 23.7 GB FREE and defrag the drive.

No change in ability to backup to WHS. Current backup started at 4:07 and is 45% complete. Typically a backup takes 7 minutes.

Is just the backup slow or is most things slow? Basically your saying a backup of 100~Gigs take 10minutes or less. could the previous backups be incrementals and this one a full backUP?

Everything is slow; start up and shutdown and the system backup to the WHS. The other two computers, I have connected to the Network have larger hard drives and take less than 10 minutes; both are Win 7 machines. Prior to July 4, this machine was backing up in 7 minutes. I started a backup today around 4 PM it at 66% now.

Ok its slow all around is the backup done to a different HD? is the HD external (usb or network) have you run sfc /scannow it will verify all the system files, and mem test to se if one of the mem modules has failed. try those and Ill be back hope someone else has an idea in the meantime

I would recommend downloading Process Explorer from sys internals and check for process using large amounts of CPU/memory/Disk activity.

Also I would suggest you check the event log for any errors. May give you some indication of a problem.
Start,Run, open 'eventvwr.msc' Then check the system log under Windows Logs

Another place to check is Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools > Advanced Tools
Try the top and bottom options
View Performance details in the Event Log & Generate a system health report.

Hopefully that gives you some leads.

Ran Process explorer

CPU usage is at 100%

svchost.exe is consuming 84% of CPU usage.

svchost.exe is where windows services run so one of the services is having a problem. In Process Explorer double click the svhost.exe that is using the CPU then click the Treads tab and see which thread is using the CPU. Select the thread then click module which will give you a file properties tab. Check the details tab to see what it is.
I would also suggest running a virus scan.
