What happens when you uncheck everything but 1 antivirus in the startup tab of msconfig and then restart??
Does the problem persist or does it improve?
If it persists, I would look at processes in task manager next.

Yeah, you did not say anything if it has improved now that you have only one antivirus checked for startup.
The easiest thing for me to see as the cause here is conflicting antivirus software because it is advised to have only ONE antivirus program installed and running at once.
If not, it could be a malware infection.
If its possible, can you tell or show us what items did you disable so far?

I haven't disabled anything - I just hid them. I don't know which ones to disable and cannot get a screenshot to show you what is left.
If it was a malware infection, how would I fix it.

I'm having trouble getting through to you.
Once again: uncheck everything but 1 antivirus in the startup tab of msconfig. Then restart. Does the situation improve or not????

I have included a screenshot as we may be having a confusion here between Startup items and Services.
On the "Services" section, upon hiding Microsoft services, you see a list of third party services that were made by companies like AVG, not Microsoft. You can disable them all but leave ONE antivirus related service (such as the one labelled with something like AVG) because unlike the Microsoft services, these third party services that are not antivirus related are not that necessary for the computer and the computer can live without them.
On the "Startup" section, you see a list of applications that open when you open the computer. In this area, its also advisable to have only ONE antivirus program enabled. So disable one of your antivirus programs here and leave the other enabled.
In my opinion, I would remove one of your two antivirus programs because the two of them would conflict each other thus causing this dramatic slowdown of the system. You just have to choose between Malwarebytes and AVG which one should stay.

I have been following both of your suggestions, hence the confusion as to what I have done. I have deleted all but AVG. Doing all the suggestions has seemed to speed of the computer, especially opening my mail.

Keep most of that stuff in the startup tab unchecked.
If you can make a list of the UNCHECKED items on that startup tab, we can probably ID most of them and let you know which you should check or which you should leave unchecked.
Another thing you can do:
Recheck an item in the list. Just one. Then restart your PC and see if that one thing makes it slow down. If it slows down, then you know that that one item is the culprit and be sure that it stays unchecked.
I have only 3 or 4 things checked on that list of boxes.
You should look in there from time to time and see if any new stuff has been checked.
You can also look at task manager by right clicking the task bar. Look at how many processes you have on the "processes tab". Ideally, you would have only 40 or 50. If you have 60 or 80, that could be slowing you down too.

Well, that didn't last long, it is taking a while to open my email again.

I'm not sure any of those ever need to be checked. Possibly the Intel items you could check, but I wouldn't for the time being until you get to the bottom of the slowdown.
Try this:
Right click taskbar and open task manager.
go to processes tab
Poke the memory column with the mouse. This will sort processes in order of what is using the most memory.
Then let us know the names of the top 3 or 4 items and how much memory they are using.
Secondly: poke the "show processes from all users" button and tell us how many total processes are running.
