    Shuts down instead of hibernates

HP dv5-1235dx Entertainment notebook, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4gb RAM, 32 bit.

Hibernate file is enabled, PC appears to go to sleep and then hibernate correctly at timeouts, but shuts down instead.

When restarted it does not Resume Windows but starts up to the "Windows didn't shut down correctly" screen which offers "Start Windows Normallly" or one of the Safe Modes.

Same thing happens when Hibernate is triggered from Start Menu, or by Shutting the Lid.

    Any ideas on this?

    Hi Greg,

Have you tried a powercfg -L at the CMD prompt? This might offer a clue as to the power schemes currently available.

powercfg -A lists all the supported sleep states available. Might offer a clue too....

Sorry I couldn't nail it down any better.

    Regards,

After trying everything else I ran Startup Repair to see if there might be some boot sector corruption, and sure enough there was a hidden Vista partition WinRe wanted to add to Dual Boot. Once it was added Win7 resumed correctly even after I hid it again using EasyBCD.

I'd therefore classify the prob as boot sector corruption, a known cause of hibernate issues in a Dual Boot.

Owner has a bunch of files on Vista so I need to leave it in reach for now.

    Thanks.
