Sloooow Win7

I'm a newbie so please be gentle.

I installed Build 7100 (32 bit) about 6 weeks ago as part one of a new build. The end result is intended to be a Dual Boot Hackintosh. Part one is installing the windows OS and making sure everything works well.

Hardware:

DFI DK P45-T2RS Plus (It was either this or a Gigabyte mobo which seem to have more problems)
Intel Quad @ 2.33 GHz
4GB RAM Corsair
1.5TB Seagate HDD
DVD and Blu-Ray burners

All drivers are current as of 7/13/09 but I haven't upgraded the Bios.

From the beginning opening folders has been very slow. On XP in
Windows Explorer I was accustomed to swiftly navigating through folders, at least a click a second. On Win 7 every click takes 4-5 seconds. Navigating is painful.

I run CCleaner a couple of times a week and defrag daily because I create and manipulate a lot of files.

Network operations work as fast as they did under XP including the internet except when I access my WHS files from Windows Explorer. I have the same 4 to 5 second lag. If I RDP in to the server I don't have the lag. I also stream video from the server to my Win 7 rig (view it in SageTV) without any problem.

It seems to me the problem is Windows Explorer but I don't know how to fix it.

Any suggestions and help is greatly appreciated.

thanks for the specs on your system. I have one thought. It might be win 7 indexing. wht you can do is to open task manager and see whats running and whats using cpu time. the other thing is that you should probably make indexing set to docs for multimedia files. it takes less time. there is a thread here at SF that was solved with the same problem. If you do a search you should be able to find it.

Thanks, Indexing is not running because I never turned it on. In XP it was more of a hindrance so I kept it off and never turned it on in Win 7. My CPU usage is low unless I'm running a photo program or watching video or converting files.

I also installed the 64 bit version on a MacBook Pro in VMWare and Windows Explorer is a lot faster on that than on my desktop.

Hey there, I just built a machine about 2 weeks ago that I intend to run as a "hackintosh" as well and am still in the "get windows running" stage as well. I've got the gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R mobo in my build.

I don't believe that I have seen slow browsing with windows explorer. I've been building and rebuilding trying to track down some issues, so I'm into an out of my install folders fairly frequently, and I haven't noticed any slowdowns in performance from XP, or Vista.

Did you notice this slow performance right after the installation of Win7? Also, have you considering using 64-bit...since you have 4GB of RAM, you would get full utilization of that Ram with 64-bit. I've been running 64-bit on my new box without any problems at all.

I considered 64 bit but I couldn't figure out if all of my programs would run correctly and I knew that they would with the 32 bit version. I'm considering installing the 64 bit version on another hard drive and trying out my programs.

Windows Explorer has been slow since installation but I expected that since in my limited experience Vista is slower than XP. But the more I work with files the more I frustrated I get. Last week-end I had to process several hundred photos for my DH and it took hours longer because of Windows Explorer's slowness.

I'm stumped and haven't been able to find much to help but I'll keep searching.

I finally got tired of the sloooow performance and reinstalled Win 7. This time around I installed the 64bit RC and so far I haven't had any problems.

Should've done this 2 months ago but I was trying to wait until next month for the RTM because it is a pain to reinstall all my programs.

Windows Search, is on and active when you install Windows Vista or 7. The Indexing feature you are confusing with the one in Windows XP, is completely different. I personally will just wait for a bit and let Windows Search do its indexing and get the bulk of its work done.

I haven't had much success using those types of programs. Plus, since I didn't know where my problems originated I figured that it would be better to reinstall the programs on a fresh OS. All of my files were backed up on my server plus I had the HD with the original Win 7 install and all my files. Did the new Win 7 install on a fresh HD and then loaded my programs and my files. For email and browser I use MozBackup which is the only transfer program I've found that really works for me.
