Computer takes ages to boot

Hi all, not sure if this is the right section for this, so sorry if I've made a mistake.

Over the last couple of days, my computer takes a good hour to boot when it only took a couple of minutes before. I get the impression it's freezing, because it'll stay on the exact same screen for about 10 minutes, then move on to the next one.
It'll stay on the first motherboard screen, then move on to the black screen, then the "Starting windows" screen, but nothing will move on any of them.
As soon as it manages to get to the password screen, everything's perfectly normal and I can log in with no problems.
I'm running a 64bit version of windows 7 with a Pentium Dual Core E6300 2.80 Ghz, 8GB RAM and 1.5TB hard drive.

Anyone have an idea as to what's wrong? Thanks in advance.

Personally, being an impatient man, I would do these :

1. Make sure my computer is clean. Run a full virus scan.
Malwarebytes is one of the best for this job.
Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a free download that removes viruses and malware from your computer( pickthe free version)

2. Do a disk cleanup to get rid of all the temp files etc.
If my machine is running fine other than slowness, I would also run the More Options ( step #7c ) which will remove all the restore points except the most recent one.

3. I would then do a disk defrag using Auslogics instead of the built-in disk defrag program which will take ages to complete, if it completes at all.

4. For a good measure, I would do a system file check to look for corrupt files and to repair them if possible.

Hey guys, thanks for the fast replies. I run virus scans, disk cleanups and defrags quite regularly, and tried them again and it didn't work.
But then for some reason, it started booting fine again! So thanks a lot for the help, not sure what did it!

Did you .....
1.use More Options to remove restore points ?

2. run system file check ?

Maybe one of the above did it.
