System Problems -SFC Found Issues and Unable to Fix

I have been reading your thread on doing a "repair install" within windows 7. Below is what I have been going through, but my real question is that my system shipped with vista 64, and Dell then sent me an upgrade disk to Win 7 64. I assume this is nothing majorly different than a normal upgrade disk you could buy over the counter, but I wanted to know if I am able to try this repair/install with Dell's Win 7 upgrade disk. IS this the best course of action or is there another suggestion?

I have been having some issues recently with Windows Update in that it seems each time I update my Windows 7 64 bit system (from updates from Microsoft) when the computer restarts it crashes my system to the dreaded blue screen. saying there was a problem with startup. The computer tries startup repair and is always unable to fix the problem. The only way I have been able to recover is through Comodo Time Machine to the point before I install the updates, and things are fine. I restore to a snapshot, then I once again install the updates, and the updates install with no problem (I know, weird.) I am beginning to think there is a serious problem on my machine. I am running Norton Internet Security 2011 and have ran virus scans with no issues. After I restore from Comodo and then reinstall updates, my system runs fine with no issues.

I went into windows update and performed a repair on windows update, and it says it fixed something. But when I go back into it, and try to repair it again, I get the same message (I.E. it fixed something) I never get a message where it says "there are no problems."

I ran a memory test and found no issues (although when the computer restarted from the test, I had to walk away from it when windows rebooted and there were no messages on my screen saying it failed).

Then I ran the sfc/scannow and it says it found corrupt files but it was unable to fix them. I tried again and same response. My questions are, is this the best next step to take? Also, am I able to do this, as my computer was originally installed with Windows Vista 64, and I upgraded the OS via a Dell provided Windows 7 64 upgrade disk. Will a repair install work from that Dell Windows 7 upgrade disk, or should I not attempt it?

Thanks for the help and info in advance.

    Welcome
You may continue to have problems if you did an upgrade.
You chould do a clean install with format.
This is the best way. You will have to reinstalll programs etc, but that is easier than continually having little problems, like now

    I suggest installing, again.

This is the tutorial showing you how to obtain the " releveant " part of the cbs log.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
    ***Go to Option Three

You can post it back here and one of the experts in that field will help you how to replace the corrupt files that sfc could not repair.

If you come across an expert asking to see the entire cbs log, here is how :

Go back to your cmd window ( make sure it is run as administrator mode )> at the flashing prompt, type this command line...........
    notepad c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log
( Note : better to copy/paste the line to avoid typo )
    > press Enter key.

The cbs log will show up in notepad window.

Go with the clean install. Dont take the easy way and try to resolve this problem
I know this is not what you want to hear, but trust me on this one.
    The experts will agree.
If you already did a clean install with the upgrade dvd, and the CBS log shows problems too difficult to resolve the next step is a repair install.

is it honestly not worth going through the SFC file log to see where the problem is?I was hoping to fix this as easily as possible. I know you can clean install via a normal microsoft win 7 upgrade disk, but will this still work with my Dell branded "Windows 7 upgrade disk?" I definitely dont want to have to install vista, then 7 again.

Hello Danny, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Could you please use Option Three in the tutorial below to create a sfcdetails.txt file on your desktop with only the SFC scan result details from the CBS.LOG in it. The CBS.log itself is just to long to sift through. :)

I used the attached message because I tried to copy and paste exactly as it was in that sticky post and for some reason it will not let me (I cant remember the exact error message because I did it last night). So I saved the text file and cut it down from 11MB to 1.5MB - I deleted a whole bunch of stuff (if you scroll to the end you will see the errors). Im sorry I couldnt do it the other way.

    1. You don't delete anything from the cbs log because you may delete something relevant.

    2. RE : sfcdetails.txt file
Which part of the Option Three you could not follow ?
We should be able to help if you explain the problem of following the tutorial.

    RE : Sfcdetails.txt

All you need to do is go back to the " Run As Administrator " cmd window
Copy and paste this command line at the flashing prompt.....

    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

    Then press Enter.

The sfcdetails.txt is now on your desktop.
