memory upgrade
i upgraded laptop RAM from 1GB to 3GB and it made no difference in computer performance, not even 1%.....................

It depends on what you're running at the moment. If all running processes use less than a gb, it doesnt matter how much physical ram you have installed.
You should have bought the exact same Memory spec as your 1GB so you could have achieved dual-channel support.
Adding memory was never about performance, unless your system was being severly chocked before. If you have a high end system with 1 GB of memory, I guarantee you'll see a performance increase in a current game if you went to 4 GB. However, that's a unique situation. On something like a laptop or a netbook, where you are only using mild, office/web applications, you may see the OS perform a little snappier, but that's about it. Web browsers won't suddenly open faster. The system will be more responsive under a load, that's all.
Adding physical memory is always a good thing, what happens is, when you run out of physical memory the hard drive is then used as physical memory which is slow and creates more heat, bad for a laptop!! Don't think that you have wasted your money, I would have done the same thing!!
