    Lately we have been plagued by the do-it-yourselfers, those who don't realize that Quack Viper never graduated to Win 7, those who use the super duper tools and so on forth.
    I really don't think it is necessary to call anyone a Quack, There are always people who don't understand the technical details of what they are doing. Users who visit Charles site "blackviper.com" in most cases are pretty technical.

    I personally have visited his site and found that the information was pretty valid for most things. Of course anyone who does not understand technical details can go wrong using sites that are pretty technical.

    Just like Mark Minasi's site "minasi.com" for windows server experts, I have been on Mark's site for many years and occasionally see new people who don't even understand what a server is used for.

    PS: google Mark Minasi and Charles Sparks to see who they are.

    I believe people need to just start taking responsibility for their own actions. If they do not know what they are doing then they shouldn't be messing with these type of settings without getting detailed help with it first. If they decide to just jump in and make changes to these settings without knowing what they are doing or getting additional help first, then you really just cannot blame the person like blackviper that provides these guides.

    There's only so much one can do to make a guide as easy to understand as possible for general use by everyone. In the end, it's the sole responsibility of the end user to know their limitations and seek additional help before going off and doing something they have know idea about and crashing their OS.

    This is an excellent guideline for everything you do in life. Unfortunately many people act differently. Just think how some invest their money or the people that bought houses without knowing how to pay for them.

    @Brink:

    How about what I mentioned earlier in this thread.?Having a blazing red sticky section about cautions when using Win7. Maybe title it:

    " Before using this forum read this," Your New Win 7 Operating System, PRECAUTIONS to take when using it."

    Then detail in bullet points which items NOT to change without first asking one of the MVPs or gurus .

    I know it really shouldn't be necessary to have this type of thing but unfortunately there are so many computer illiterate people out there and they honestly don't have a clue about how easily you can screw things up just by "grazing the options" to make system changes.

    I think that MS should have a set up page built into the OS that forces the user to take several minutes reading simple statements that make this kind of point to the users before they can actually start using it. I think that is half the battle. Sure a few people will b*tch about it but the overwhelming majority of users NEED this type of precautionary primmer. Which I have a feeling would prevent many serious issues.

    Hello Legacy,

    I would also hope that was already understood by common sense.

    I just don't think it would be practical though, and may cause people to get alarmed unnecessarily. Unfortunately, the damage is usually already done before they get here. About all we can do is to help them the best be can with clear details.

    @Brink:

    Ah yes , "common sense", where has it gone?

    So many folks today do not have that quality, it is almost scary.

    I know when I first got my shiny new HP Pavilion 7955 with Win XP, I really didn't know much about Win OS at all, yet I already understood that it would be wise to only make changes to things that I didn't completely understand after asking. Of course back then there were only a handful of Win XP help sites, and many didn't have expert help only people making suggestions. !!!! Also getting help directly from MS was actually harder back then compared to today with MS Answers!

    How about the other suggestion I made about MS putting some kind of brief precautionary statements as a "forced read" before consumers can actually start to use the OS? Even though I and others like us here don't need this I would certainly be willing to see it displayed and wait the few extra minutes so that other less aware users could be cautioned saving lots of trouble in the long run.

    That might not be a bad idea, but it would most likely get a ton of complaints though.

    This reminds me of the toaster, and computers in many cases are just like toasters, in that you can buy a computer at the local store. They also sell toasters and most don't have a label on the front to not put a metal knife into the toaster slots when it is energized. As John and others have said, there is such a thing as common sense which no one can print enough warnings about.. There will always be someone who defies logic and does the unthinkable.

    It will be forever. My computer doesn't XXXXXXX. We don't find out until page 37 that the OP has downloaded 13 programs that duck with the registry. Their are people that think if they can download it great things will happen. They do no research or ask any questions on sites like this before downloading and installing. They never will. I know of no cure for this type of thinking. It's kind of like, (Windows 7 doesn't work like XP) DA, no Windows 7 works better than XP.

    Devils advocate here. What is wrong with a user that never prints or shares files to disable; print spooler, windows media player sharing service, homegroup lister , homegroup provider? Or a user that has a security suite, disable firewall and windows defender?
