x86 vs x64 = which is faster
All things being equal i.e. RAM (3 GB), Processor, Graphics Card, etc.
Which OS would be faster ? Windows 7 RC x86 or Windows 7 RC x64 ?

You're probably just going to get opinion unless you run some benchmarks yourself.

Faster at what? Some applications, or application types, benefit greatly; others do not. Few modern applications suffer. The answer also varies by platform, meaning that not all hardware is equal. This is where benchmarking serves you.
Conceptually, 64 bit is substantially faster when properly configured and implemented. Think XBox 360 vs. Super Nintendo. Or something like that.

tests have been performed on this, for vista this is one of them , on PCMark test, 64-bit seems to have a small advantage, but on 3D Modeling and rendering test/Media Editing and encoding there is little difference. also not much difference in first person shooters RTS games.. in general there is benifit but it's still small at this stage, maybe in the future as applications start to be writen spesificly for 64-bit we will see some more improvements..
can't find any windows 7 tests yet, try googling and see if you get lucky!

Speed depends more on the hardware. Even If you run windows 98 or 2000 on Core2Duo processor and 2 GB RAM, it will run much faster than imagined. Hence if you go for Windows 7 64bit, make sure you have correct hardware configuration or else it may run even slower than 32bit.

Hmmm ... Interesting.
Upgrading from Windows XP 32-bit to Windows 7 RC 64-Bit has madea significant difference for our design team in Solidworks.
The article indicated minor differences in Vista 32 to 64. Maybe when all apps are native 64 and well-coded (i.e. debugged and optimized) will we see true advantages.

Sadly, I reverted back to x86, I didn't see ANY speed improvement, in fact, in some work, it was much slower, also of course, it took many hours of searching to gain the appropriate drivers for the hardware... no, to me, x86 "feels" more comfortable

Since putting it on, and running it for a month or two, x64 is "better", imo, which in turn makes it a little quicker. It has crossed my mind once or twice to revert back to x86 just because of a few tiny annoyances, but the positives for me far outweigh the negatives, and it would be like taking a step backwards.

64-Bit is theoretically better, but it greatly depends on the applications in question, as well as the systems hardware. With the proper hardware and compatible software 64-Bit wins every time.
