If your running Vista as well can you at least try selecting the Detect HAL option I mentioned earlier while your in Vista.
I found a thread on Vista Forums that said by selecting that option it actually changed the BIOS as well, so it may be worth a shot and and can't do any harm trying.

I have tried to find this symptom for a dying CPU but have had no luck. The strange thing is it still works, just slowly, and uses WAY more CPU than it did before. It has 4GB of RAM so it's almost worth buying a cheap AMD and using for a while longer....I just wish there was a way to tell if it's a bad CPU.
I think the only way your going to know for sure if it's the CPU or the Motherboard will be if you can test the CPU on another computer or if have another CPU to try on that Motherboard.
And I don't have either one. Maybe a small shop I have down the road will be able to test it for me....
The good thing is I still have access to my data. I guess I need to clone it in case whatever it is goes all the way...
Funny thing is the BIOS shows the correct L2 and L3 cache on the CPU and good temps.

It is entirely possible that your CPU has partially failed. 3-core processors are, in fact, quad cores where one of the cores has failed the testing procedure. Instead of scrapping the CPU, it has been rebranded as a triple core model. Unfortunately, because of this there is an increased risk of one or more of the other cores failing. However, many people are using a triple core processor without any problems, so it could be that you were one of the unlucky ones.
Before you give up though, download and run CPU-Z to see what that yields.
Well Dwarf, I believe you're right. I am down to a CPU failure. Post #7 has CPUZ tab 2 posted. Here is tab 1, it's showing one core! I will test the CPU on another board (if I can find one) today. I think I got a crappy CPU and I;m paying for it now. I guess it was a good time to build a new one. (system specs)
Also, HP has a "diagnostic program" by PC Doctor at boot. I ran this and the CPU "passed" and I can run a "torture test" on the CPU and RAM and I get no errors. It's just slower now....

Looks like it's CPU, but still could be mainboard.
That could have been over heated or shortcircuited.
Going to a shop to check it, seems the best thing to do.
Well, look at it as an unique experience.
Now you know what a Celeron feels like.

LOL, I just can't get over the choice to build a new computer in the last month. It sure turned out to be a good time to build! I got a good year out of a $350 computer!
I still wonder why it's still working (slowly) and if it will completely go out.....
I put a new Thermaltake PSU it this system just to see.
No change. Just an update.
Must be a mobo or CPU.
