    Internet Explorer Icon

    Hi guys,

I apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum to be posting thread or if this question has been answered already (in which case I wouldn't mind a link or two) AND for the length of the query.

I have a bit of a funny problem. First, I pinned the internet explorer to the start menu from its location in "all programs". Having done that I deleted the shortcut (if it is that I wonder now) from the "all programs" list. I'm just weird that way. Now I do not know whether this was a direct consequence of the deletion but after a little while i noticed the internet explorer icon of the pinned shortcut had reverted to its generic version. I tried changing the icon by going into properties but that didn't work.

Strangely enough, when I looked at the original app in the program folder it had also reverted to a generic icon. So I decided to go disable the IE service from programs and features, restart my pc for it to take effect, turn it on and restart again. The icon was back in the "all programs" list but was still generic but its target in the IE folder was back to normal. I tried pinning the shortcut to no avail. So I tried pinning the original app itself. The entire list of pinned programs disappeared! And when I removed IE from the list it came back.

[ Okay then. In an effort to eliminate a possibility for the disappearing programs in the start menu, I unpinned a random app. The entire list disappeared again. If try to change the position of an app which has just been pinned, the list disappears. Don't know whether the two are connected issues ]

Somebody please help because this is just weird and I really need IE nice and accessible and my start menu working! I'd really appreciate any help.

P.S Pinning it to the taskbar also gives me the generic icon.

Hello Kalaris, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you pinned the IE shortcut from All Programs, then the pinned items would no longer work or display properly when the target source IE shortcut from All Programs was deleted.

You will need to unpin it from the Start Menu, create a new IE shortcut directly from the IE iexplore.exe file, place that shortcut where you want to have it at, then pin that shorcut to the Start Menu.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    Kalaris,

Try the IE shortcut for your 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7 in the ZIP file below. Be sure to place the shortcut where you like it to remain at, then pin it to the Start Menu. If this shorcut gets deleted or moved, then the pinned Start Menu shortcut will no longer work.

If the icon still does not display correctly, then see if changing the icon to the IE icon a couple of times will allow it to displat afterwards.

    You're most welcome Kalaris.

The pinned Start Menu item may have had an incorrect target location to the source file.
