The Advanced Tools Performance Issues just says I may be able to improve performance by adjusting Visual Settings, but I think that's just because I've got custom settings (mainly just disabled the animation and fade effects).

The Performance log had a lot of

The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Reason : Graphics subsystem resources are over-utilized.
Diagnosis : A consistent degradation in frame rate for the Desktop Window Manager was observed over a period of time.

but I think that's something to do with MediaPortal as it hasn't generated any such messages today when MP hasn't been running.

I'm afraid I don't know what you mean by "tap system resources".

Standby works fine when I initiate it manually, so I don't think a standby trace is going to help. I've noticed thought that if I do "powercfg requests" a lot of the time it shows

    SYSTEM:
    [DRIVER] Legacy Kernel Caller

so perhaps if there's a way to find out exactly what that is, I can stop it and auto-standby will work again.

When this happened to me, I went to device manager, right-clicked on mouse and keyboard devices, and if there was a power management tab, I unchecked the option "Allow this device to wake the computer."

Thanks, I seem to have already done this for everything under Human Interface Devices but there was a couple of things under Keyboards and Mice that still had it enabled, so I've unchecked it for them now.

Not sure it will work as Powercfg requests still shows

    SYSTEM:
    [DRIVER] Legacy Kernel Caller

but I'll see later whether the PC goes to standby now or not.

Hey, I seem to have tracked the problem down to TVService.exe, part of MediaPortal.

I came across this thread on the FTR forum For The Record - View topic - Legacy Kernel Caller and some tips about Windows 7 Power Management (iBoyd) » Windows 7 Power Management: Fixing PC Insomnia

So last night I tried killing programs and stopping services and checking again after each one, but I couldn't get rid of this Legacy Kernel Caller. This morning, after a cold boot, it was there again, so I stopped MySQL, TVService and then my Nova-T driver and it disappeared. It didn't come back after restarting my Nova-T driver or MySQL however, only with TVService and if I then stop TVService it goes away again, so maybe I just didn't wait long enough after stopping it and before stopping the Nova-T driver the first time.

Anyway, the fact I couldn't get rid of it at all last night suggests that perhaps TVService leaves it stuck even after it's no longer running. It may be something to do with the setting "Update EPG when idle" but there seems to be a bug in this, as it still updates the EPG when idle even with this unchecked!
