Hi,
Its Solid State Disk.
The best way to describe it as a big flash disk that replaces a conventional mechanical disk drive. So it is quicker and less prone to mechanical failure. Do a search for Solid State Disk. I have just replaced mine on my music laptop .. it boots in 7 seconds from cold.. but the bottom line is that it is best to use for a boot drive for O.S and software.
They are very expensive in comparison to conventional mechanical disks.. but they are becoming cheaper by the month. I'm sure there are loads of more senior members that can enlighten you more with technical prowess of these devices. They make Win 7 really snappy .. a lot.
An SSD is a Solid State Drive. Unlike most hard drives it has no moving parts and are much faster than spinning hard drives. It is the speed and response time (from the time you click the mouse until the program opens) is much faster. Most spinning hard drives have a response tim of around 14-15ms. A good SSD has a response time of 0.1ms
Whoops .. its late.... SOLID STATE DRIVE... there is no god damn disk.. that's the whole point to it in the first place..lol
O.K they can make you computer more responsive in real world use.
Mechanical disks need to spin, and find the data... these puppys don't ... so its a more high tech usb drive that you replace a conventional drive with. Common size is 2.5 like the same size as the drive in a laptop, but much light as it is chips they use rather than a magnetic disk and all that shielding .. you can get 3.5 sized ones.. but most users get a 2.5 and use a converter kits.. which is a bracket and various cables to fit into a desktop HD bay.
I've just been converted .. did it myself with a help from this forums senior members´.
You've been converted? Didn't know you measured 2.5"
Hi, I'm originally from Lilliput. Right now I'm jumping from key to key on the human sized keyboard and pushing the mouse along. Phew!
Hope your mouse pointer is set to its fastest speed. LOL!
Welcome Mr Bass :)
+1 thank god i came across this page. I just build a new computer with SSD and normal HD and thought i was being on top of my maintenance by defrg them every week.
