Searching for solutions to a different problem, I came across a puzzler. The WD drive shown in the screenshot, is the AHCI drive that the OS is installed on. Is it not strange for a hard drive to be listed in this fashion?

It now seems that the improvement in performance that I first saw was a flash in the pan, so I decided to try to install the all-in-one driver from ASRock. However, the file type is .sys, instead of an .exe or .inf, so how would I install it?

you can't install a sys file, only copy it. if it is only a sys file, that is lame, especially if the amd drivers from their website aren't working (did you ever find out why?). Are the speeds back down? I'm not sure how to go about this. Might consider updating the BIOS and see if it helps any, but that can be difficult, and I'm not sure if you have an older BIOS version or not. I would think asrock would be better at providing drivers than they seem to be. You might look for a driver through google or call them up and ask them. Other than that, I just don't know whats going on. Perhaps a clean install would allow the AMD driver to work, but that can be more hassle than it is worth.

I agree with most everything that you said, particularly the "...more hassle than it is worth" part. Since a .sys can't be installed, I wonder why they even offer it?

I discovered part of the problem. It seems that all of the files on the ASRock download page for the USA are defective. I downloaded the all-in-one driver from the European link, and it seems to be complete. However, when I tried to use the setup.exe in the root directory, it didn't install anything. I then checked the subfolders and found the AHCI driver, but before installing it, I thought that I should re-install the Marvell controller driver, since that is where the hard drive is connected. On reboot, I found that the drive is no longer displayed in Devices And Printers, and looking in the Device Manager, the Marvell controller now is shown, but instead of 4 instances of all of the devices under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, there are now only 3 of each, as it was before starting this endeavor, none of which are marked AHCI. It seems that I have gone full circle, and don't know where to get off the merry-go-round?
EDIT: When I just attempted to install the AHCI driver from the ASRock directory, it wouldn't install either using the Install command on the right click context menu, nor by navigating in the Device Manager to the driver folder, it said that the best driver was already installed. Of course, I was only guessing about which device to try to install it on...one of the Standard Dual Channel IDE controller. I tried that, because that was the only device marked AHCI after installing the Windows driver.

I dunno man, all I do is set the MB to AHCI, install Win 7, download all ASUS drivers including Raid and AHCI drivers (RAID you might try, by the way, as it is similar to AHCI and you don't need a RAID configuration to have it). After that, everything works like a charm.

Thanks, that a very informative link, but it does leave one question unanswered for me. If I use the Windows driver to enable AHCI, it causes the Marvell controller to disappear from the Device Manager. I fail to understand how a drive can be properly controlled, when the controller connected to the SATA slot connected to the drive is disabled?
For the purposes of file transfer speed and general operations, I haven't found that it makes any difference that I can see, whether the Marvell controller is enabled or not, however I have noticed that Windows boots a bit faster when the Marvell controller is disabled.

If I understand your question correctly
The Marvell driver uses the SCSI Miniport driver so the controller shows up as a SCSI device. When you use the Microsoft driver, it uses the Microsoft SATA driver to control the device and the controller shows up under IDE ATAPI controllers. It hasn't disappeared or been disabled. Does that make sense?
