Task scheduler unable to load task status/active tasks at startup.

My task manager is unable to load task status/active tasks at startup.

I get the message: "The selected task "{0}" no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click Refresh."

When I refresh I get the same message.

I checked and found that under Microsoft the problem was in the defrag folder. The same message recurs: "The selected task "{0}" no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click Refresh."

These messages did not occur earlier. I can't help wondering if I changed the details of the scheduler through the disk defragmenter program and that caused some kind of conflict.

I tried turning off the schedule and then deleting it from Task Scheduler. I tried recreating it in Task Scheduler and ran into some problems (screen shot 5). All these things work fine until I reboot. Then the problem recurs.

I tried running system file check but there were no irregularities found.

Thanks Roderunner... I did that except I chose monthly (why defrag weekly?)

Happy to have helped. My defrag app is Auslogics. I only use it if a defrag is analysed as required.

But the problem is that tasks are not running and the scheduler not available now because of this problem... i think this could mean trouble brewing.

Thanks, I did run scannow twice and no issue was found.

Actually, restarting the computer is the action that causes the problem. If I go into the defrag program directly, alter the schedule slightly and restart Task Scheduler the problem disappears.... until I reboot! Then it tells me the task no longer exists and to check to see if the folder exists (it does). The file ScheduledDefrag is in it.

I wonder if deleting the file C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\Defrag\ScheduledDefrag and restarting the computer might force the file to be remade, as in rebuilding a windows media player library...

but I don't like doing that kind of thing because my understanding of computers is very limited.

Additional info: If I open Task Sched after reboot I get the error message. If I click on Microsoft-Windows-Defrag I get the same message but if I don't and just click the schedule I can see that defrag is listed.

I also note that the times for the action were at variance probably because at some point the sched was set in defrag itself... I tried exporting the action into the folder C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\Defrag but I found the existence of that xml file didn't help.

What other programs are giving trouble?

My problem is with the Task Scheduler, as I've written above. Never mind... I tried to restore and now everything has disappeared - even the program files folder... every application dead, unable to restore after restoring to an earlier point and trying to reinstall Norton... back to factory settings I guess cause it won't allow me to restore from the image I made on an external, which makes me wonder why I did it in the first place... maybe after factory settings are restored I can restore from that image... I hope!

Thanks anyway. I wasn't looking for a disc defragmenter.
