hxl7: You might try two things. First restore folder permissions to their defaults. I'm not sure how to do that, but if you search Sevenforums, you'll probably find a way.

Second, and you may have tried this, is there a restore point you could use to set things rights?

    sibbil:
thank you ... unfortunately, I got the same result in safe mode.

    gogreen:
thanks very much ... I do know how to restore permissions, but I do not know the names of the folders in question indicated by the Troubleshooter:
    "Problems found
Incorrect permissions on Windows Search directories Not fixed"
Can anyone tell me the names of the "Windows Search directories" ?

unfortunately, the last restore point I had available did not resolve the issue.
    Thanks.

If you bring up Indexing Options, can you see a list of folders? Those are the folders you need to own and give yourself permission to access.

No. Unfortunately, all I see is "indexing is not running" at the top and the area under "Index these locations" is blank.
    Thank you.

If you go to Services do you find that Windows Search Service is running?

No, it is not running. That actually was the original question/problem of this thread. I am not able to start the service. Thank you.

I didn't realize that you actually went into services. I thought you were just trying to start via the other dialogs that may have appeared.

And now I just reread your third post about denied access. Was the service set to Automatic (Delayed start)?

    sibbil,
I tried starting the service when set to Automatic (Delayed Start) as well as Automatic. Both produced the same failure to start the service.
    thanks so much.

Is there a way to reset Windows 7 permissions to their default settings? I'd search the forum for this, but I can't at the moment. See what you can find.

Try disabling, rebooting, enabling the Windows search feature in Programs and Features in Control Panel (select Turn Windows features on or off on left hand side).
