... sibbil !!!!! ... You did it ! ... I can hardly believe it ! ... I have tried soooooo many different things and nothing changed anything ... until I tried your last suggestion !!!

" ... disabling, rebooting, enabling the Windows search feature in Programs and Features in Control Panel (select Turn Windows features on or off on left hand side)" did the trick !

I really can't thank you enough! Thanks "a million" for sticking with me and thanks to everyone else who tried to help. So much appreciated.

    Very best wishes,
    Bill

Kinda makes you wonder how it got mucked up in the first place, doesn't it?

And thanks for posting back what finally fixed it for you!

yeah, it really does. i wish i could shed light on that to help prevent the situation for others. but i really have no idea. i'm kind of an extreme user -- online 12+ hours per day, multitasking like crazy the whole time. i was too far down the road before i realized i had a problem and was unable to back track. but i'm content to just chalk this one up to all's well that ends well and am overjoyed i did not have to end up doing a clean install -- not that I can't; I've done many ... but the time it takes to reinstall all the programs i use and get all my tweaks back was just more than I have time for right now. so, thanks, again. happy trails ... -Bill

    Have you seen this:

    Imaging with free Macrium

Created by whs. You can avoid ever having to do reinstalls of all your os/apps/settings/tweaks.

Heed sibbil's advice. This is what I use: Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download. I create a complete disc image monthly.
