Tuneup Utilities 2012 Registry Cleaner crash

hi, recently when i tried to use the tuneup utilities 2012 registry cleaner to clean my registry, with the "Complete Scan" option, it always crashes when it scan till the "Program Settings" section of the registry.

anyone knows why this is happening? i have this problem before, i reformatted my computer, and now i'm getting it again. my os is windows 7 ultimate x64 by the way.

While others maybe more knowledgeable about the precise error codes you have, I think I will express the majority opinion here, and recommend against using any type of "registry cleaners", including Tune-Up Utilities and any number of other similar apps.

Based on my personal experience and on multitude of posts in these Forums, I think that Windows 7 does a very good job keeping itself lean. Moreover, most of these utilities actually do more harm than good.

You mentioned, that you have re-formatted your computer. I am not sure whether you mean that you have reinstalled Windows, but if that's what you did, then why would you think that a registry cleaner is necessary? Sometimes, if you keep installing and uninstalling software and you do that a hundred times a day for a few years, the amount of left-overs from incomplete uninstalls becomes rather large and you might think that deleting such entries from the registry would be useful. But this is an extreme case and even then I would advise to proceed only if you actually understand which registry entries are being deleted and why.

If you are trying to use the registry cleaner to deal with a particular issue, I suggest you report that issue here and we'll try to help you with it.

by reformatting, i mean formatting my harddisk and reinstalled windows 7 os.. when i first installed tuneup utilities just after the clean installation of windows, the registry cleaner works fine.. but after a few reboots, the registry cleaner starts to "stop responding" whenever it scans till the "Program settings" area of the registry. i use registry cleaner is for the sake of easing my mind, because whenever i uninstalled some program, i will keep feeling that there are some leftover registry keys that the uninstalled program didn't manage to delete off. i have tried a few alternatives, ccleaner only detects a few errors, little registry cleaner detects a bit more than ccleaner, but tuneup utilities detected the most number of errors...

Well, that's what I meant - there is absolutely no need to "clean" the registry of a newly installed Windows. Sure, after you uninstall a program, there might be something left over. But this something is very unlikely to slow you down, while a false positive on the part of the cleaner app may seriously damage your system - you may not notice it right away, but down the road you may find an impossible problem with the only solution - to reinstall again.

Personally, I am running Windows 7 already for 3 years or so without any issue and I never clean, defragment, and so on. This not XP!

Now, if you really feel the need to delete every little bit remaining after uninstalling a program, you may try to test new apps in a virtual machine and install only those you are sure you'd keep. Another solution is to use Revo uninstaller - you can use it to "track" the changes to the system at each new install, such that they can all be undone at uninstallation (by using Revo that is). Finally, if you are installing something for a couple of days, you may try to use System Restore - create a Restore Point, install the app, and if you decide to get rid of it, simply Restore the system - no need to uninstall, no leftovers. If your personal files are separated from system files, they will not be afected.

Run SFC -SCANNOW Command to see if the Registry Cleaner crapware you installed has damaged Win7. Then uninstall the crapware.

I would Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 anyway and stick with the tools and methods given in the tutorial which are all that is needed to get a perfect install and maintain it. The steps are the same for retail.

What you should do is to first uninstall Tuneup Utilities from the Computer. Then if you feel confident enough then manually remove all Key and Values in the Registry pertaining to the Tuneup Utilities.

After that is done reboot the Computer and reinstall Tuneup Utilities 2012. The Registry Cleaner Applet in the Tuneup Utilities should now work as it should. The Registry Cleaner in the Tuneup Utilities is an excellent application and I have never seen it create any Registry related problems in Computers for the last so many years.

Respectfully, I would do a clean install of 7 and leave the 'cleaning' software in it's case. The registry cleaners are just legacy software from the days of Win 98 and XP. Win7 is good, Win7 is great and it absolutely doesn't require a registry cleaner.

In search of a problem caused by Chrome after an upgrade, I uninstalled it, re-installed it then uninstalled it again. I looked at the Registry and there was no sign of Chrome anywhere. The OS is doing a very good job; I'm impressed and pleased I took everyone's advice and avoided Registry tweaking software.

I've tried that before, manually uninstalling tuneup utilities... and then after a few reboots, reinstalled back. but the registry cleaner still throws the same error, crashing whenever it scans the "Program Settings" section..
