    Sudden slow start-up ...

This Sony VAIO All-in-one VPCL22Z1E is one month old. There is not much on it, except AutoCAD, Open Office, Van Dale Electronic Dutch-English dictionary, Mozilla Thunderbird, Mozilla Firefox, Chrome browser, Adobe Reader, Gimp 2, Skype, Avast, Google Earth, WordFast Pro (CAT) and a few more tiny odds and ends.

It usually booted in about 30 seconds.

Then suddenly this week it has slowed down to taking up to 1 minute and 55 seconds to boot.

At the black Starting Windows screen, I notice that the polling to the hard-disk stops, then after a while it starts again and eventually I get into Windows 7 desktop.

I have followed plenty of the forum messages to try and trouble shoot this and restore my once rapid boot time. Nothing is working.

I do notice a lot of posts on the Web about this being a problem with Sony VAIO and Windows 7 64-bit Pro.

Has anyone had success at increasing boot time for this computer configuration?

    Thanks ...

    Dave

If you haven't done it already, type msconfig in the start box.
Click on the startup tab, and see what's running at startup.
You can remove anything you don't recognize by unticking.
See if that makes a difference.

Nah, msconfig was the first thing I tried. There was no effect. The slow start-up time was unchanged.

I will now answer the rest of the replies ... but I am up at 'sparrow's fart' this Monday morning because I am calling Sony VAIO support Nederland to see what they think for such a dramatic change in boot on a spanking brand new machine.

    Thanks for the input!

I am reading through your very clear and excellent sequential steps and will probably do that. I appreciate your link to those instructions.

I want to see what Karl says about the files I attached above first though.

    Thanks blokes!

    Dave,

    Uninstall:
    Code:
avast! Free Antivirus AVAST Software 08-Apr-12 7.0.1426.0
    Java(TM) 6 Update 31 Oracle 11-Apr-12 95.1 MB 6.0.310
McAfee Security Scan Plus McAfee, Inc. 09-Apr-12 8.30 MB 2.0.181.2

    REBOOT!

Both Avast Free and McAfee are known to cause problems.
By uninstalling Java, then if any program you have really needs Java, you will be prompted to dowload the latest and mores secure version.

Install MSE, Microsoft Security Essentials , link in my signature.

Simply uninstalling those programs And installing MSE may solve your problem.

    Karl ...

I shall of course let you know. I have always used AVG Free in the past (previous Windows installations), but for some reason with this Windows 7 I installed Avast. McAfee was already on the system when I bought it.

I am reading through the link you provided for MSE. A dumb question: is this product sufficient for my security needs (which I had previously used AVG Free and Avast Free for?). Sorry, I don't keep up with OS stuff, obviously.

I am a CAD user and a translator. I do not download huge audio and video files and I do not use my computer for social networking. If I create a web page, I type HTML using Notepad. I guess I am Old School.

    Thanks ...
