As an example MS Word used to take 2-4 seconds to open but with a SSD it's open as my finger lifts off the mouse button. You may lose your computer, a SSD is faster than light.

I have just bought an Alienware m17x, with the 750gb 7200rpm hdd. I hear there are two hard drive slots, and was wondering if it would be significantly faster installing a 128gb boot drive, where I could get one from (and for how much), and if it is easy to install - I am not particularly computer minded.
    Thanks,
    David
Yes. Significantly faster. Installation easy. However, to enjoy the advantages of your new SSD, you must put your operating system on the SSD. Installl programs to your SSD. Put videos, music, pics on the HDD.

If and when you make the decision to buy a SSD, then start a new thread wherein you ask us how to set up that SSD.

And is it possible to install, for example, all my applications onto the ssd, and will it make them substantially quicker?
You can install applications onto the ssd and they are faster. I got an ssd for my main desktop and my desktop can reboot in 23 seconds with an ssd. It can do a full reboot in that time. You will think hard drives are slow after you get used to the ssd.
