what is disadvantage of defrag??

Some RPs will be lost by third party defrag tools as they generally do a more thorough job than Windows own defrag.

I've used Auslogics Disk Defrag for years and never had a problem.
Also many recommend Puran Defrag.
Run it once a week and it will keep everything working smoothly.

As mentioned, never Defrag a SSD.

Why the strong feelings against third party defraggers?

Sorry, I don't want to come off as strong. The average "Joe" doesn't need to be lost in third party defragmetners. Also, I like to use the Microsoft version instead of a third party's because Microsoft knows Windows better than anyone else. After 20 plus years of Windows OS's if it needed a more thorough defrag it would already do it.

I have a little different view on defragging. The performance gain achieved by defragging is quite small and results in a gain of a few microseconds here and there. Those microseconds do add up but it takes many, many file accesses to realize any gain. In reality, the time lost by defragging will NEVER be regained by the small gain in performance.

Having said that, I do defrag my drives, but I'm not anal about it. I've actually had drives that I didn't defrag for years, when I checked them they were badly defragmented but, after taking hours to defrag, I noticed no increase in performance.

As I said, the time lost during the defragging process will not be offset by the small performance gain so always make sure that the defrag is scheduled for a time when the system is not in use.

When I was using XP I would run it every 2-4 weeks.

So I did the same for W7 at first. At least the check for amount of defrag which was always 0-1%.
Then I found out it ran on a schedule so I forgot about it.

When I went to clone W7 from my spinner to my SSD I checked the amount of defrag before doing so.
0% and I had not checked it in at least 4 months.
So the defrag scheduler was working and is one of the + of W7.
