Slow file loading when opening folder within program

I'm moving from an XP machine to a Windows 7 machine and have transferred my project files (engraving files as well as .bmp). When I try to open a project folder in any of the programs I use it takes 2-3 minutes for it to load all the files.

There are just over 10,000 files in the folder, they are all small files (nothing larger than 100k), and on the XP machine it loads in an instant.

I have done everything I can find online (turned off indexing, changed the folder prefs, etc) and nothing works. When I open the folder within Windows it loads in an instant, however when I try to open it within a program is when it drags.

Does anybody have any ideas of what else I can try outside of threatening the computer with physical violence?

Also as you can tell by my screen name I'm a mac user that has to use PCs at work. Please keep that in mind when offering suggestions as I am relatively lost on this machine.

    Thank you all!

    Me too

I am having this exact same problem but with "drawing files" which are also around 10,000 items in a folder. While I'm in Excel, editing a hyperlink to a network folder, EVERY directory with more than 100 folders or files hangs. These folders load fine in windows, but the program takes forever to load the "open" window.

I hope someone has a fix for this. I am fully updated/patched via windows update.
