Even if you stick with the 2GB, you will NEVER be able to use the full 2GB because of video shared, and other processes that reserve the ram.

Well it is extremely weird that even when you install the 2GB stick, that it is not registering properlly, but like Ladyback said, there isn't going to be a noticeable difference in your computer performance.

WEll you could also just keep both 1 GB sticks in there that you originally had.

You could always install max. ram amount for your notebook. You would see a difference.
