Boot Hang Solved; separately Sleep Problem Solved

I want to share how I solved these problems to give back to the many posters I read here who helped me.

First, the sleep problem. The second day after I installed Windows 7, the computer went to hybrid sleep (s3) overnight. When I moved the mouse the case light came on, the fans roared to life and ----- nothing! Black screen. A plain old hibernation worked fine, but a plain old s3 sleep did not (s1 did work). After reading and trying many good ideas presented here, but with no change in results, I gave it my last idea. I unplugged the P/S from the mains, I opened the case, and I firmly pressed on the graphics card and the graphics card power connectors to make sure it was all properly seated. You guessed it. I've had not one problem with sleep since. I'm using my board's default settings (auto) with ACPI and ACPI 2.0 (enabled), for anyone who is wondering. I'm guessing that at some point in the first day I slightly dislodged the graphics card. It is strange that the computer booted and otherwise behaved normally, but it did.

On to the boot hang . There was a 120 second boot delay on some reboots. The delay only occurred after the computer was powered up and in Windows 7 for more than approx 30 minutes. It hung right at "Windows Starting" and precisely 120 seconds later the first firefly would appear and continue with a normal Windows 7 boot. First I determined from the boot log that the boot only really started when the firefly appeared and that everything from running a start repair to sfc revealed no problems. So it seemed to be the hand off between the BIOS and the OS where the problem was occurring. I then tried clearing the CMOS. That and various BIOS settings and tweaks didn't work until I finally disabled Legacy USB. There is a minor inconvenience in doing that if I need to get into safe mode with my USB keyboard, but it is easy to go into setup and enable it if need be. In the mean time, I have reasonably quick reboots (59 seconds according to Restart -Time). I certainly no longer have a hang in the Windows boot -- everything keeps moving along.

This same computer booted Windows XP SP3 fine with Legacy USB enabled. But hey there could be any number of reasons for that up to and including that I was using IDE in XP and am using AHCI in Win 7.

I hope that by writing this, it will help someone else, or give someone else an idea as to how to solve these problems. One piece of advice, don't give up until you've tried everything you can think of. If you can still think of something to try, short of blowing up the computer, do it. It took me several days to solve the sleep problem and over a week to solve the boot problem -- especially fun because I had to wait at least 30 minutes between reboots to test it.

Update to my original post. New BIOS for my board -- 602. Flashed it this morning and can now have Legacy USB on Auto and also reboot without the 120 second time out. It takes a little longer to re-boot because BIOS is now enumerating all the USB devices. The BIOS was purported to fix a "no media in device" CD-ROM error, but sometimes other things magically improve with an updated BIOS as well. For those with this board, my original BIOS was 402. I have a Asus P5Q PRO Turbo motherboard (noted here, just in case that changes in my specs at some point)

Thank you so much for your thorough search in resolving the boot hang problem and posting this. I had exactly the same problem and resolved it the same way by disabling legacy USB storage support in the BIOS. Good find! You must have tried every BIOS setting to track what is causing this!

The hang also occurred after hibernate (either directly or after hybrid sleep with power loss). Note that in this case the firefly 'resuming windows' animation still runs immediately, but after that the hang occurs with a black screen and a blinking cursor in the left upper part of the screen. After this the system likewise continous within the same two minutes as during normal boot.

Our hardware is completely different by the way. Unless I miss some small part of the motherboard that we both have... Though if many boards suffer from this, then I am confident Microsoft or the motherboard makers will solve this. I'll note the USB devices I have below.

The recent BIOS updates did not make a difference; I still have to disable legacy storage support. But as this motherboard type is brand new the BIOS team at Gigabyte may be focussing on other things first.
Note that this board allows to disable legacy storage support separately (which resolves the problem), and has an additional setting for both keyboard and mouse legacy USB support, so I can still use my USB keyboards and mouse during POST! The only thing is that I cannot boot from USB with the setting to disabled.

I note my system here, cause I have multiple systems and laptops, so no point in putting it in my profile (shouldn't everyone do this instead?)

    USB devices:
Logitech USB wireless keyboard & mouse combination
    USB TV-tuner (Anysee E30TC)
Microsoft Media Centre remote control receiver
    Internal card reader
(I didn't try removing them yet to see if it would help)

hangs every time after sleep using newly installed wireless keyboard

after I installed a new Logitech K320 unifying wireless keyboard and using the "Power" button to put my ASUS P5Q PRO Turbo to sleep, it:-

    - could not be waken and hence needed to force shut power
    - then firstly, pressing power again did nothing - no sound, no harddisk action, no boot up screen
    - then remove COMOS battery, power
    - then have boot up screen, and ever since, if booted normally, it hangs shortly after boot success and a minute or so after welcome screen
    - OK if in safe mode
    - same after removing (no longer using the new wireless keyboard) and system restoring to a previous point
    - same after upgrading BIOS to 602

    plse help. Many thanks.
