Worrying session with a logmein tech

I just called Microsoft re the outlook.com issue and someone said there was an issue with my registry entires.

So I let this logmein person from a some company called My Tech Gurus Inc go through the machine and he picked up on heaps of errors in the event viewer and said there was a virus in there and would keep slowing my machine down until it finally stops. I asked if a reinstall would cure it and he said no but to sign up for $399 for two years service for them to clean out my registry as it needed someone qualified to do it - can't do a thing myself apparently.

Now I agree there are lots of errors in the event viewer and quite frankly I have no idea what they are about. What is worrying me though is the statement re a virus self replicating in my registry.

So am now pretty worried re what is happening as this is my main machine - can someone give me some advice as what to do please?

What evidence did he supply to demonstrate the precense of malware infection?

Do a full scan using ESET on-line scanner.

Fellas I am an IDIOT I Googled Microsoft and the very top ref was from a site microsoft.techgurus and moron head phoned and thought it was Microsoft support and it turns out to be a very well done not exactly a scam but a get you in the door sort of outlet.

I have tried to get onto Microsoft to let them know and I think Google too should be taken to task about this one as it fooled even yours stupid truly

That was a narrow squeak - I did run MBAM and the Microsoft Security Scanner plus my Kaspersky had run a full scan about three hours prior with no hits.

So for the unwary the site is right at the top of the Google if you type just Microsoft and if I had clicked on the hit I would have seen it wasn't a genuine MS site - I just called the number on the Google ref.

Oh and Golden no mate he didn't he just kept plugging that the reg had to be done every month now you would have thought that would have had me catching on eh?

John, every Windows PC will have hundreds, maybe thousands of errors recorded. They are for diagnostic procedures and do not mean there is a virus. Those "gurus" just wanted to relieve you of a bunch of money or maybe to steal info from your machine while connected. It is a full fledged scam.

Yeah Gary mate I was really too slow there eh? To be honest I am more peed off with Google letting that sort of stuff go on and I reckon Microsoft should give them and the site a blast too as it tarnishes their name eh?

One thing with Google is not to use the top 3-4 results, they are sponsored and may not give you what you want. Google's servers simply scour the entire web and stores key words and phrases not really knowing what a site may be.
MS would crack down but those criminals who do such crap are very mobile and use many different servers and locations so are hard to find.

Yeah you're right Gary just I was (and am) again a bit gung ho (as you might know by now) I was an idiot for not being on my toes / game.

Mind you I wonder how it is they don't have "security people" watching what is put on line - bit like swanning into a shopping mall with weapons dripping off you and just being able to wander around.

The other thing is I guess Google must charge for the service? so how come they are not vetted at that point - surely those executives couldn't be THAT stupid - or could they?
