computer turning itself on during night

could be the network card recieving magic packets.

To stop this you can safely cut the power in hibernate, wait till you hear it power off then either (a) flick the switch on the psu if it has one or unplug the plug from the socket.

Sorry for jumping in like this, but here goes...

I've been having a similar problem since around the new year. At ~3am my pc would start up do its own thing for a couple of minutes and shut down again, only to try again an hour later... I finally caught a message in the systray refering to Windows Media Centre and after looking it up found that WMC was attempting to "consolidate" at 4am - despite the consolidate option being turned off!

Removing Media Centre did nothing - my pc continues to start up during the night (unless it is physically switched off.)

Tonight, however, I caught my pc as it started (~3.06am) and after finding this thread tried the 'task' command offered at the top.

Listed under 'Games' I find a trigger fo 2am daily, last run at 3:54am, 11/02 and next scheduled for 2:13am 13/02 (I'm guessing I've cut in somewhere around the 3am trigger on 12/02.

Now, taking all this back to my original comment about having had this problem from around the new year a quick check shows that I installed a popular, though somewhat old (2002) game on 04/01 which I believe runs in xp mode.

Is it possible that a slightly older piece of software is checking for updates and is causing my machine to start up? Or is this just a coincidence? Either way, I also have a pc that starts up during the night...

Here's another one. I had a similar problem with one of my laptops and a desktop at random times, but also am, without fail.. I accepted it for some months and then decided it was time to investigate.

Found out eventually. Both computers have infrared detectors. They were in line of my lounge TV. Whenever the remote was used, the computers woke up!!

I had the same issue with my computer, but I can’t remember which of these resolves fixed the problem. The first thing I did was run Spybot Search & Destroy, (freeware)you get that at Download .com You may have a dirty little program running behind the Scenes. The other thing I did was, just by coincidence, at the same time I was having problems with my EVGA GeForce 9500GT video card (I sent it back for repair.) The card was also having driver compatibility issues with Widows 7. I replaced the defective card with ATI Radeon HD 4670. I didn’t have any driver incompatibility problems with this video card. If I were you, I would run Spybot before going out and buying a new video card. It cost nothing to do this, give it a shot, you never know. Good luck

I have multiple internet connections. On one I have special unlimited high speed option for use during night time when most businesses are offline. I used task scheduler to run a script under XP at a specific time to switch the ISP. I do the same under Win 7. Unfortunately I can't find the option of rescheduling under properties. I have to delete the task and create it afresh.

Any help in simply changing the time would be appreciated.

Mine wakes me up at 3am due to UsbCeip updating !

I can see what's causing it wake up, but I'm unable to edit it in the Scheduler due to it being a hidden task !?

How do I edit this item so I can enable 'only run when powered up' ??

Just found a temporary solution (I think Set 'Allow wake timers' in Advanced power settings to Disabled !! But that stops everything from waking it up, of course, not just the usb thingy

firstly, yes, I realize this is an old thread, but I have an identical problem.
My computer (built by me, but uses a mobo from a 2005 fujitsu-siemens computer) wakes up from hibernate and sleep during the night. When I turn it off, it stays off. When I leave it on hibernate during the day, it stays asleep. But overnight, it wakes up (at some point, I may stay up all night to see if it is a specific time). I have done the following:
-disabled ALL wake up power management stuff in the BIOS
-run the powercfg thing, it had nothing
-looked at the task scheduler after it had woken up. no tasks had happened in the last 24 hours

Hibernate is not the same as sleep. The difference between hibernate and and switching off is that in the first memory content is written to the hyberfil.sys file and upon booting up is written back to memory to resume exactly where you were. It still requires either the bios timer or wake on lan kind of a signal or press of the power button to switch on.

This is definitely a bios setting related issue and not any setting in windows.

Hey man, I had a similar problem to the one that you are having. My computer kept turning itself on and a set time everyday and it would turn itself off to, Nothing to do with electricity surges or anything like that.

Are you using a network adapter? If so follow these steps and hopefully they will help you out.

1. Go to Device Manager
2. Right Click on "Network Adapter" and go to properties.
3. Go to Power Management tab and untick any of the boxes there that say "Allow this Device to wake up the computer.


When I did this it fixed my problem and my computer has been very obedient since
