Laptop freezes every hour for about 10 to 15 min since last week

I got this laptop I bought in 2008 upgraded from vista to windows 7. Everything was fine even if running windows 7 on this machine did destroy my battery.
But since last week 24/08 exactly, my laptop has been very slow and would freeze every hour as if it was scheduled. I got a message that I needed to download some updates. When the system first occurred, I restore it to an earlier point in time and got rid of the updades. But it changed nothing

I am helpless at this point because I spent all my money on the upgrade and I don't know where to find help

Thank you for your reply :)
I just did everything you said.
However,it seems as if I have a bigger problem. My laptop just crashed and I had a blue screen out of nowhere. Now I am in safe mode, things seem to be going from bad to worse. I have no clue what is going on

    Hi

The BSOD is related to your graphics driver specifically the igdkmd32.sys... Bugcheck 116 (video TDR failure)

Go here to update all your drivers and BI ......especially your intel graphics drivers...

    Then let me know

everything just got worse. When my laptop slow down, the CPU usage remains between 0 and 9 %, this is what happened this morning. But the difference is that this time, even after 20 min the laptop was still so slow that I could even open a file without it taking ages. So I restarted it this morning. After that something terrible may have happened because after tipping in my passowrd, I had the usual 'welcome' page of window, but after the welcome page, my curser remained on ablack screen and nothing changes. I cannot access my data and I can do NOTHING now even in safe mode, it wont log in
    I am totally desperate

Just reinstall the system (without format) better if you managed to install Win Xp in another partition, to make sure your data in C: are not changed. Then you can backup your data located in "users" folder. you can do the same by using a live CD or flash (windows or Linux) without installing XP.
