CHKDSK frozen for nearly a day?

I restarted my HP laptop yesterday and it went into chkdsk and has been running for about 24 hours. It seems to be stuck at 11% for the last 6 hours. Is it actually stuck? Should I wait longer? Is it okay to try to shut down the computer and restart it? I am pretty much a novice when it comes to these types of issues. And I do have a lot of my college schoolwork on this computer that isn't saved to a backup device.

    Thanks for any help

How large is your hard-drive? Are you checking a drive which doesn't have a OS installed on? If so, please close any applications and do not use the computer while disk check is in use.

DO NOT shut down the computer while disk check is running, as this can damage the hard-drive.

If I remember right the hard drive is 250GB. I will attach a screen shot of what the computer is doing. I cannot get it to do anything at the moment and it has been stuck here for about 8-9 hours now.

I would be worrying that your disk is failing.

That's what I'm afraid of. I have all my music, videos, and documents on this laptop and since this chkdsk is frozen here I have no way of getting them saved to something else. Would there be any way of getting them off of there at this point?

    Hmm..

You have bad clusters of data on your hard-drive that are being repaired, which doesn't give a positive impression of what might be found later if CHKDSK is able to progress.

Well my computer shut down and when I started it back up it is unable to do anything. Was able to get it to run a hard disk test and after about 30 seconds it said it failed. So I guess it's time to get a new laptop. Unfortunate because I had all my music and schoolwork on that hard drive. Is there any way to retrieve it?

This is one of those gray areas that may or may not work. It involves removing the failed hard drive from the laptop and freezing it. Sometimes the drive can be brought back to life for a very short period of time. Usually less than 30 minutes. Since this is a laptop drive you'd need a USB enclosure to house it so it can be connected to a working computer. If the failed drive is recognized you may be able to transfer the data to the working computer's hard drive. But again, with such a limited working time frame, you may be looking at days or weeks of freezing > installing in the enclosure > connecting to the working computer > transferring data.

Failed Hard Drive Data Recovery by Freezing the Drive

There's another utility called SpinRite. I think it costs $95 now. I've used this to recover data from a failed hard drive that was running XP Pro. Took almost a week running 24/7 but it worked. SpinRite does not have any caps on how much data can be recovered. Many of the free recovery programs will only allow a couple of gigabytes before you have to buy their pro version. So it kinda depends on how much your data is worth to you. Professional recovery shops usually charge many hundreds of dollars (some more than $1,000.) The thing with SpinRite is they have a simple guarantee. If it doesn't work you get your money back.
