    How to fix errors not fixed by Sfc /scannow (cmd.log)


    Hi there,
    I recently did a clean install (Win7 Home Premium 64bit) on my 1,5 year old Lenovo laptop and ran into some issues, such as slow and unresponsive windows explorer. Following the steps suggested elsewhere, I ran a file check (Sfc /scannow) and the cmd.log tells me that the following errors couldn't be fixed. It looks like there are essentially three types of errors (I marked them with different colours). Who knows how to fix them? Thanks

    Hello kiwiflave and welcome to Seven Forums.

    When you did the clean install did you format the entire hard drive or just the C: partition? If just the C: partition you may still have the hidden Lenovo recovery partition available. That would return your computer to factory specifications including all factory installed drivers.

    If the recovery partition isn't available you could try the Lenovo support site and make sure you have the latest drivers for your E420.

    One of the Forum experts prepared a tutorial on how to clean reinstall a factory OEM Windows 7. And there's another tutorial on how to do a standard clean install regardless of computer make or model. You may want to review these just to make sure you didn't miss a step.

    Hello marsmimar and thanks for the reply. When installing Windows7 from bootable CD (iso file), I only formatted c and left Lenovo's recovery partition (Q) intact - just in case. I did try factory reset from that partition twice but every time ran into problems, some of which related to preinstalled Lenovo software, which is why I did a 'clean' install of the operating system, actually following the tutorial you linked to. I haven't yet completed all the steps of that tutorial because Windows (explorer) was very slow with frequent freezes, so I want to solve this before installing more software (Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials both show no finds). I am now running the Lenovo system update software and will have another look at the drivers (do you recommend to install all drivers mentioned on the E420 page?).

    Do you have any suggestions how to deal with the errors that I pasted in my initial post? Any help appreciated :)

    If you know for certain that your computer doesn't need a particular driver, don't install it. (Just as an example, I have a Sony Vaio VPCEB47xxx. It shares several common components with other similar models. On the Sony driver download page it offers an updated driver for a fingerprint reader. My model doesn't have that reader so there's no reason for me to install it.) Otherwise, I'd go ahead and install. If you install a driver that isn't needed, nothing bad will happen. It will be no different than any other program that's installed but not used.

    You mentioned that you used a bootable CD (iso file.) From which site did you download the iso? This Forum recommends Digital River as the official download site and the iso should be burned to disk at the slowest speed possible to increase the probability of a good burn. The tool recommended is ImgBurn because you should be able to select a 4x burn speed. If there's any question about the quality of your install media it might be advisable to make a new disk. Other than that I don't have any other suggestions. Sorry.

    Ok but I installed Lenovo's system update software so assume it detects missing or outdated drivers automatically(?) Anways, I installed some updates but no real improvement so far. One thing I noticed is that when trying to shut down, the computer tells me it's waiting for explorer.exe to play log off sound. Does that tell you anything?

    Lenovo's system update software should alert you to any needed drivers or anything else your computer needs from Lenovo. If you get an update alert it should tell you what it wants to install. It's your computer and you have the final say if you want the update or not. Critical updates affecting security or computer hardware should be perfectly OK to install. (At a minimum, make a restore point just in case. Better yet, a system image.) Optional updates (like for a fingerprint reader that's not on your machine) can be denied.

    Concerning the wait for explorer.exe to play the log off sound, does the log off sound eventually play and the computer shut down normally? Or do you have to force a shut down by pressing the power button? (Not a good idea.) You could check for any damaged or corrupt system files by running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and reboot the computer after each scan.

    Yes.

    Considering all you've tried, you might want to do a repair install. Your user accounts, data, programs, system drivers, etc should be preserved. If you want to try this, carefully read all the notes, tips and warnings that are involved.

    Repair Install

    You'll need a Windows 7 installation disk and it must be the same edition of Windows 7 that you have installed. An OEM recovery type disk won't work. If you don't have an installation disk you can download an official ISO file from Digital River. Then burn that ISO file to a DVD at the slowest burn speed. Many of the Forum experts recommend a 4x burn speed using the free ImgBurn.

    Hi again,
    Thanks for your help. In the end I ended up buying a new internal hard drive, after tests with software from the manufacturer of the old one (WD) failed. The laptop is now all up and working again :)
