High CPU Usage (100%)

I've read thru some old threads on this but haven't solved my issue as yet. My netbook will bog down horribly. Rebooting clears things up - but only temporarily.

This is a Toshiba NB505 Netbook running Windows 7 Starter 32-bit.

Below are screen shots of task manager and msconfig.

Can anyone help?

What version of Firefox are you running? It shows 50% CPU in your screen shot. Try disabling AddOns one by one. See if the usage drops to normal.

If you sort on the CPU column to get the high number at the top, that should be the culprit or one of them.

Firefox 17.0

There was a google update plugin that I had. I disabled that. Looks better! Maybe that was it. I'll post back once i know.

BTW why doesn't the cpu numbers under processes add up to 100% (or whatever % is being used at that moment)?

They list "Idle" as a process but it's really just a No Operation the computer does to keep from losing its mind. If you add Idle and all the others it should always total 100%.

edit: otoh I guess there's a setting to "show processes from all users" in Task Manager. If it's not enabled then it may only show your processes and services. Just google terms: Windows Seven Task Manager ... and you'll get a bunch of hits with various aspects covered.

Also you can get free 3rd party Task Managers. One I like is DTaskManager

Thanks Miles. Now I see everything. Wow yeah "Idle" uses a lot of resources doesn't it.

My firefox is still using 54%. It's the only app I have launched. I have one plugin left - shockwave flash - suppose I can try deleting that next.

They probably should have named it "Free" or "Unused" because it generates a lot of "why is idle using 99% CPU" when of course it's not used. It's idle.. as in unused.

Kind of like "where is the ANY KEY?" in the old Dos days. You might have to look that up on Wiki if you're not an old timer. :)

I would try downloading Firefox Portable. Run than and see if it's a lot better.

Very high physical memory usage, no high usage programs running
Hello everyone, I've been having a very weird problem recently, in which I BELIEVE is involving high physical memory usage. Sometimes I will be doing things such as playing a game, or watching a stream, and my computer will run fine for a little while. But at random times, my computer will majorly...

Stuttering and high CPU usage while downloading at high speeds
I've been having this problem now for an year or so now. It started when I upgraded my connection from 8/1 ADSL to 100/10 cable (so the problem wasn't noticeable even if it was there before) and when I download at high speeds (in steam, for example) my CPU usage jumps to 80% and higher, and my pc...

Very high CPU usage, causing very high laptop CPU temps (90c idle)
This problem began yesterday. I noticed my CPU was at 90C constantly with very high CPU usage (>50%). I had no major programs running. I rebooted several times and the program persisted. 1. I went into safe mode and everything was normal. So this rules out hardware issues. 2. I reformatted and...

Windows 7 random CPU usage and high physical memory usage!!!
Ok, I am literally KILLING myself over this! I installed Windows 7 64Bit over XP around a month ago and it was so good that I recommended it to my brother who was previously on XP too. We got him a copy of the 32bit version as he has only 2gb of memory, and he installed it on his machine....
