    A background program called SOUND

Compaq laptop, Win 7. IE, FireFox, Thunderbird, Office 2003, Notepad are the most common programs I run. IE, FireFox and Thunderbird are running at all times. Background programs are Skype, YahooMessenger, CoffeeCup LockBox. AVG free, MalwareBytes free, CCleaner, with AVG running its overview but not its toolbar.

I sometimes notice a program show up when I shut down called "SOUND." It does not usually show in the Windows Task Manager when I hit ctrl/shift/esc. It has been in the Task Manager Applications a few times, however. When shutting down, it flashes so fast, I can't always tell if it is there, but usually I can spot the large square icon announcing it. It doesn't appear to be affecting the operation of the computer.

What is it and should I take steps to get rid of it? Thank you.

Looks like it could be a realtek thing.

Look under the "Top 25 unwanted processes". See what it says and if you want to keep it. Lots of good info here on common processes.
