Ran sfc /scannow, CBS log shows corrupted files - how to fix?

    Hello,

Could you please suggest how to fix the errors below in windows 7 home premium 64bit. Have done system restore, but the errors below are persistent, not fixed after running scannow multiple times. I have attached the sfcdetails.txt file as well. Thanks in advance.

Did you make the system recovery disc's? If so you can repair the system files using the recovery disc's.

Hello nr123, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since this involves Internet Explorer files being corrupted in both Program Files and the source CAB file, you may need to do a repair install to fix them.

I do have the Dell OS recovery and restore USB key. Would you recommend replacing individual corrupted files manually or just do a full re installation?

Blue screen errors include - memory exception, system exception, bad pool header and so on. Is reformatting hard drive necessary at this stage, since previous re installation gave "blue screen -free performance" for just couple of months?

With those issues, it would be best to do a full factory recovery.

I would try a repair/install first. What can you lose.

I can do all of that. Thanks. Bit of history - Restore to factory settings has been done twice (in last 9 months), but the same problems come back. What is the likely root cause? Have i bought a lemon? Hardware tests come out clean though.

Someone suggested I have a virus, which is not going away with the currently installed Symantec Norton Antivirus, so a hard drive reformat is necessary before a re install. Additional suggestion - Norton antivirus itself is causing all issues in OS 7 and i should get a different antivirus software.

Open to trying all and any solutions, hoping to get a permanent fix this time. Thanks all.

I doubt that Norton is the cause. I used Norton on several systems and never had a problem. But then you never know.

I would also suggest doing some sort of HD diag on your disk as it is very unusual for files to become corrupted.

Check the S.M.A.R.T. data for your drive. If the Attribute Values or the Worst Values show as lower than the Threshold Value, your hard disk maybe questionable.

I use SIW to view the S.M.A.R.T. data.

As to diags, you could consider using "HD Tune", diags from your HD vendor, or "chkdsk /r".

I did tthe repiar install and ran scannow - no corrupt files.

Ran SIW for SMART values for hard disk, results attached in a txt file.

Does this mean the hard disk is messed up???? I have been having issues with this laptop from day 1.
