Finished upgrading my desktop, here's what I have...
Began the upgrade path by
- Maxing out my RAM (to 16GB).
- Then, invested in a SSD (Samsung 120GB--I'm already looking for a larger one!).
- Then, added a video card: ATI Radeon HD 5870
- And finally, a CPU upgrade: AMD Phenom II X6 1100T.
Cost was a little less than the original computer. Most expensive were the video card & CPU upgrade, both around $200. I started with a WEI of 4.5. Amazingly, everything pretty much "just worked" and my computer is very snappy and zings along.
Those are two sets of very nice scores AddRAM and mkadam, they must be real beauties to use..
@AddRAM, I had the AMD version of your motherboard (XFX 750a). I heard many people complaining about it, but I found it to actually be a pretty decent one overall. Any issues with the Intel version? Looks like you've still got a really decent rig built on top of that board at the moment.
As suggested, I added a Samsung 840 Series 120GB SSD to my backup rig:
Benchmark shows I'm limited by SATA 2:
However, performance increase is really big, now I'm waiting for a Core 2 Quad Q9300, then my backup pc will be complete :)
Now I'm waiting for the new CPU... I expect another big performance increase :)
