Computer Fails to Resume After Sleep

I know there are far too many of these threads out there and I have attempted many times over the past various fixes to no avail so alas, here I am. Figured it would be much easier to start from scratch so here goes:


My PC fails to resume after sleeping. I tell it to sleep fine, when I try to resume it from sleep the power lights flash up and the fans start spinning but only for a second before stopping completely. Usually it takes at least one or two attempts of starting the PC normally (via the power button on the PC as opposed to mouse/keyboard) before it will actually start properly as opposed to simply powering on for a second then off. However, when it does start again, it starts as if it's resuming from hibernation - i.e. the desktop will return to its previous state when I attempted to sleep etc etc.


Any help or advice on where to begin would be fantastic :)

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Make sure that your video drivers are updated - they impact the sleep/hibernate functions.

Temporarily turn off sleep and hybrid sleep per this tutorial:
Windows Does Not Start After Sleep

Restart the computer and set it to hibernate after a short time.
Let it go into hibernation by itself.
Did it come out of hibernation correctly?

Now try the sleep option (leave the hybrid sleep turned off).

Work through the Sleep Mode Problems - Vista Forums

Update your video driver, roll back if necessary, try another driver until Sleep works. Set Power Options>Balanced Plan>Advanced Plan settings timer to 1 minute Sleep, 2 minutes Hibernate for troubleshooting purposes.

Tried all manner of combinations of having hybrid sleep on/off, hibernating, hibernation on/off etc and still no luck. Also, I doubt it's a GPU driver issue since I've always had this problem. Moreover, when restarting, after the first initial second-long power up after sleeping/hibernating; the DRAM LED lights up on my mobo before powering off. When it does finally power up properly the boot_device LED lights up....


Not sure if that's any help or not.

What is the ASCAPI Sleep state setting in BIOS setup?

Where do I find that? Unless I have missed it somehow I can't seem to find it for the life of me.. and googling it hasn't helped either :S

It might be called something else, but the settings are normally S1, S2 or S3. You want S3. Not all BIOS have it.

Nope can't find anything that has those options =/

Have you installed all Important and Optional Windows Updates after enabling Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3)? Do that now.

Then if prob persists try another Display driver. The correct answer to this suggestion is not "I don't think its the Display driver." This is the top tech forums on the web. Please cooperate if you want our help.

If you have the latest Display driver, then try the one previous to it, even Vista if necessary.
