Cannot delete volume in disk management. The partition is in use...

I am trying to clean up a messy disk configuration by deleting two volumes from a disk and then extending the C: drive to occupy the entire disk.
I have deleted the first volume successfully but when I try to delete Vol E I get the error message that "The partition Vol E (E:) Simple Volume is currently in use."

At one stage there was music and video on there but that is long gone.

I can't figure out what is trying to use Vol E. How do I go about tracking down what is looking at it?

    Any guidance would be useful.

You're looking to delete it anyway, and I get the impression you've emptied that volume to add it to C.
So, don't worry about what may be trying to use it.

Just force the deletion, and go about with what you want to do.

I didn't want to do that without having some knowledge of what was trying to use the drive.

Anyway - I rebooted (it is Windows after all) and then tried again and it worked fine.

Hiyya Ian mate if you are still having trouble try the Partition Wizard if are just trying to delete the partitions down to just one - C: and then it will be just C: after you run the delete partitions * * * etc.

To that right click on the partition to be removed > Delete - do the same for the others you want to get rid of and then do the Apply changes - it will warn you about what you are about to do and be careful with the C: partition eh?

An option is to increase the size of C: :)

To do that right click on it and go to extend and with the slider or numbers change the size of that partition - you then have to go Apply changes (on the left) and let it run see pic
